I am stripping my 84 tecate down to powdercoat the frame and the only thing left of it is the airbox. How in the world does that thing come out of there? I have tough ones to get out before but not this bad. Any ideas?

Is the shock removed? If so, you have to kind pry it out of there. It's been so long for me, I can't remember which side was best or if it came straight out the back once the shock is out.

Jeb, the shock is off. The only thing left on the frame is the air box. I have been twisting it around, pulling, prying, and just trying not to destroy it. I don't think I am going to use it since this is going to be a full on performance project. I would like to keep it thoigh incase I ever find another 84/85 tecate. I am always looking for them.
Did you take the boot and it's hardware off the front of the airbox where it connects to the carb?
Seems like you just have to kind of flex it out of the side of the frame once the stuffs off the front.

It's been a while for me also but I'm pretty sure it comes out the right hand side of the frame (side with kickstarter). I think that the intake boot also has to be removed. I remember it being a real p.i.t.a.
good luck

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

hadar what one way is it? Out the right side of the frame? Do I have to take the boot that goes from the air box to the carb off? If so mine is riveted on. I am going out right now to mess with it. I will be back later with results.
if you have to twist the plastic alot to get it out.. maybe warm it up with a heat gun from a distance to soften it up some.... be careful not to warp it tho...
No clips ? or anything ?

I spent some time flipping through my service manual and never found anything about how to remove the airbox.
You do need to remove the boot. And it comes out one side or the other. Seem like you have to kind of twist it out. I've done it several times years ago and could probably get it done in a snap if I had one in front of me. Try removing it from the left (chain) side. you may have to rotate the box 180 degrees in it's space so the clearance for the shock can straddle one of the frame tubes as it comes out. again if i remember correctly.![]()

It comes out the right side. I didn't have to remove the boot. My boot was nice and soft, if yours is very hard and weatherd, that may be your problem. I see absoloutly no way to remove the airbox without removing your shock.(Which you said you did.) You will have to smash the boot to push it out but if it's a good boot it will hold up. Hope this helps.
