How would I go about freeing this? The backing plate spins with the axle and no amount of wacking it with a sledge will free it.

You will be in the 10% bracket if you can get it out. Most of the time people end up ruining ALOT of other parts trying to get things like that free. It needs to be clamped down, milled out and all you'll loose is the axle.

Ahhh,,, that part in the pic brings back some good memories. I beat,banged and threw everything I had at it. Even jimmy rigged a 4 foot breaking bar to no avail. So I took it to the cycle doctor up here in hazleton. All he said to me was "that was a *****" but he got it out by i guess supperheating it or something. I wanted out of there quick cause he was fuming as he was filling out my bil lol Yes they are a pain that's for sure. have fun.
heat it up real good while its in the press. and when its hot spray some penetrating oil on it. take away the flame first. then tighten up the press. and she should move.

have you tried putting that back in the forks ( to keep the plate still.. with teh stub on teh fork leg ) .. and put both axle nuts on the same side.. lock them together and try to get that axle moving a bit.. and a bit more.. and hopefully enough to make a few rotations... etc..

Thank you for all your suggestions. I got it out.
As stated by a few I heated up the backing plate portion and gave it some wacks with a lot more ooomp this time. Before I was being too polite to the axle and it didn't do a thing.
I really hate banging as hard as I did on it (took a good 20 wacks) but I have a whole spare brake assembly so I let loose on it.
Only thing that got ruined was a few threads on the axle and they can be easily chased to work again.
I was amazed I got it out. I think that was the hardest maintenence thing to conquer on this machine, so from here on it should be easy sailing.
