You don't have to take the tire off to paint the wheel. In fact your better off not too!Originally Posted by nouseforaname90

1st just tape around the rim overlapping on to the tire all the way around. Now carefully go around the edge of rim and cut the tape precisly at edge of rim.
Now take a full size garbage bag and put tire into it. Cut about 2 inches away from rim in a circle and tape that up also. Now your set.
The whole ordeal takes abot 10 minutes or so.
Do the sanding 1st though.
Could I sand blast it without hurting the tire then?
I would think it wouldn't do a thing to the tire but don't qoute me on that. You could always tape it up 1st like I showed but use heavy duty duct tape instead of masking tape.Originally Posted by nouseforaname90
If you are doing the blasting just test a spot on the tire or a junk tire if ya have one laying around. I'm almost positive it would not harm it what so ever.
Where are you from in PA ? I'm in Slatington PA, about 70 miles N of Philadelphia, 15 N of Allentown.
sandblasting wont hurt the tire, i did them before like that i didnt even tape anything off.

My dad tells me that you have to put primer on the metal before you can paint it.. I didn't this this was true, but he tells me that you have to.. I don't have to, do I?
And I'm from Brookville.. thats between Dubois and Clarion, and near Punxsutawney..
you don't " Have " to.. but it would help it adhere better.. no big deal on rims as it's easy enough to re-do once in a while... it's not custom car job ya know !

oh.. and about the tires.. they are BearClaws 22. 12. 8(or 9 not sure ) but get 11's not 12's.. as mine rub the exhaust a bit..
They grab like no other.. awsome in mud.. but slow in sand and very heavy. donuts can be tricky on a fresh set... wants to flip you.
6 Ply. so they don't puncture, but they are stiff and heavy.. consider Maxxis like Huffa has on his.. they look pretty good and i think they might be less than 6 ply wich is a good thing on a trike !

Well if you have bare metal showing you most certainly should prime it.Originally Posted by nouseforaname90
The grey stuff for bare metal and the red primer for heavily rusted metal.
I primed all of mine and if you get that same gold paint I mentioned DON'T be too anxious to coat it too heavy or you will get runs! If it doesn't all cover on 1st coat let it be till 2nd coat. 2 nice light coats and that should do it.
Ok. I'm hopefully going to have them painted by next week sometime (don't have the paint or time right now), so I will post pics of what it looks like afterwards.
Thanks for all the help.
Oh.. and one more question.. how many cans of paint did you use on all 3 of your rims, Huffa?
I"m sure 1 can will do it.

All 3 front and back of the rims?
Well I painted 2 other rims before the SX's and had to get another can but I think one should be enough for 3.
This wheel paint (in my area anyway) is not easy to find so call a dupilicolor dealer, auto store or what ever and see if they have it.
It is Duplicolor gold wheel paint. I don't have any stock number on it but did get it at National Auto. They only had one the 1st time and i had to go running all over the place for second one.
Yeah.. there is this guy at the Hazen Flea market that I always get my paint from. He buys it in bulk and has EVERYTHING for cheap. I remember seeing like 10 cans of gold Duplicolor wheel paint for 2 bucks a can.. I should have grabbed it. Now I'm probly going to have a heck of a time finding it.
