How do the older air cooled 250r's compare to the 85-86 models? My 200x seems kinda small (not engine, but overall size) will the early 250r's be bigger? Better performance? If you can compare it to a 85-86 250r and my 85 200x that would be great.![]()

Any R will smoke your X, liquid or air.
The liquids run better, have more power, and have a 6 speed tranny, and parts are readily available of course.
But an air cooled can be modded to be pretty darn powerful as well; carb, pipe, piston, etc..

I know the 1st generation R feels like a 110 compared to my 350X. Let me rephrase.. like a 110 on CRACK! I think they got bigger in the 2nd generation.... I know for sure that the 85-86R makes the 81-82 look tiny too.
Here's a pic of all 3 generations of R's... my 82, Holic's 83, and Dynofox's water pumper....

Not much comparison between the 85-86rs and a 200x. Even a heavilly modified 200x. The water cooled r's are very fast and have excellent suspension. The 250s are also larger ergo wise. I have ridden some fast 200x's but none compare to the R's I have tried.

1986 250R- mild porting, carb mods (Clean!)
1985 350X- all stock (super clean!!)

1986 250sx- Mostly stock
1985 200x- (pretty clean mostly stock)

He's talking about the size. Top speed wise a 350x and a first gen R are probably comparable (I would think the X is a little bit faster top speed but slower off the line) but the first gen R is a pretty small trike. Probably roughly the same size as a 200x. Short wheelbase.Originally Posted by 83185s
1984 is air cooled. Liquid cooled started in 1985.

Heres a vid of mine; http://www.sandwizards.com/Videos/Troll%20Drag.wmv ........................![]()
The chassis was a bit behind the motor on the 1st generation R's. The swingarm is considerablly shorter than on the 2nd Gen (83-84R) and the rear shock configuration only gave 4.3" of travel... pre=Pro-Link days! I let someone with a modified 83R ride my stock 82R, and he was like "Dude... how do you keep the front end down on that thing??" The short wheelbase makes the 1st Gen R the undisputed wheelie king!
The front suspension was also upgraded heavily between the 1st and 2nd generation. Added travel and the narrow front tire drastically increased handling. However, has a hard core triker, I like the added challenges you need to covercome to ride the 1st Gen R. Infact, the 81R even had drum brakes in the rear!
Again... I also like the "old school" look of a roaring 2 stroke with the fat tires all around! Also, since it was the first of the "trike boom" in the 80's and Honda had some improvements to make upon it itself, there are tons of different manufacturers out there that had old school mods available. Everyone and their brother made mod parts for the 81-82R... once Honda fixed some of the limitations with the 83-84 models and the market got flooded ...only a few big names filtered to the top; less aftermarket mods were available for the later models.
