upper end noise in Honda 250 sx

I just bought a 1986 Honda 250 sx and am looking to get it into sound running order. There is a tick in the upper end of the motor, could it be low or no oil pressure or could it need valve adjustment??? If it is a valve adjustment problem is it a difficult fix, I am unfamilliar with these machines, how do I go about it. Your imput is greatly appreciated.

Spend the 25$ and get yourself a manual to adjust the valves. The cam chain is self adjusting but could be worn out or running on worn tensioners. You can crack the screw on the oil delivery pipe while it's idling and oil should come out. The actual pump has to be torn down to check it for wear. Motors that have run low on oil usually have lots of wear in the cam, cam journals and rocker arms and thats both noisy and expensive to fix. Good luck...
