i have a 91 cr 500 cylinder also and saw the 2 grinded area about the exhaust ports but i thought that those grinded area was danage done to the cylinder due to the piston. i posted a thread on cr500riders.com about the starter release in the newer 500 cylinder and one of the guy's there showed a photo of what they are... then i saw the area on the exhaust post was not piston damage...now to install those starter compression release ct racing wants $50.00 plus shipping and insurance...

I've had the accu-start in my 500 for about a year and it seems to work great. No loss of power and starts easy.
