    Oil Mixture

Recently bought me a 86 tecate and have been doing some research on what oil to gas mixture to use. I noticed on one of your guys pics that a decal says 20:1. That what the original owner says to use and what he used since he's (original owner) ran/raced it. It seems to me that the top end cuts out sometimes and cleaning the plug helps but was wondering if leaning out the mixture would help. I use a synthetic yamalube oil and was wanting to pick the brains of you peeps. Not wanting to burn her up.. Also wondering of leaning out the gas will help with the carb. Either the float or needle valve is sticking and tends to leak sometimes. A common cause in these 86 mikuni roundslide carbs from what ive read in these forums. Idea's...thanx

Mine has a Keihin PJ don't know what size LOL but I went to a 138 and it is still too fat ! I'm going to do some more jetting this weekend. It also went from first kick every time to pull start. I'm thinking about a fresh new carb. What size was the stock carb size? Anyone know this one? I got a stock pipe off of ebay and it is smaller than all the other pipes I have.. .Still more power than anything else I've ridden.

Not sure on the carb size. I do know that it's stock...no jetting nothing done to it. I bought it from a friend and remember riding it when i was a junior in highschool and have always wanted it and finally conned him out of it for $1200...who conned who..lol. I do know that it's all stock except the rear fender which he replaced. Even the tires are original with 1/2 tread left. It's been sitting in his garage all this time with very little miles on it. The Top end keeps cutting out on me and after a spark plug cleaning seems to help but was wondering if leaning out the mixture would keep the plug from fouling and hence keeping that top end umfff...without burning her up. Man what fun power....she screams!!! Take a look at her on link below and let me know if my friend took me for $1200. Not sure of the value. Just wanted her bad....doh!

The problem is not in the fuel, it's the drag from that rear view mirror slowing you down! I think you would be safe with the Yamalube at 32 to 1. They have come a long way with oils since 86.

Just like 200xman said, they have come along way since 86 oils. My Z states 20:1 also, I run 32:1 Amsoil Syn. The reason is, the oil is way better than the previous owner was using, so now I run 32:1 without any problems.

I think you got that Tecate for a pretty fair price. Its in very good condition from what the picture shows.. The plastics look very good.

Yea the rearview mirror does look corny but it keeps me from getting pulled over by the cops on the streets. It's street legal and a blast to run through town with. Especially at night!!!

    A general rule is
General Purpose Stroke Stroke Oils - 20:1, Factory oils such as Yamalube - 32:1, High Performance Synmthetic Oils - 50:1. At the time these trikes were made, factory oils were about like todays chainsaw oils.

I would say that you stole that for 1200 bucks! Great find! I run 40:1 KLOTZ Super Tecniplate in mine. Good Oil, no problems. In the winter I use a bigger main jet and then run my oil mix at 32:1.

Even in my elevation? I must say my trike has never been jetted and I live in Montana where elevation must play some part. Thoughts?

    thanx

You dont adjust your gas/oil mix for elevation changes, but it may require carburetion changes. You ned to monitor your spark plug to see if changes are warranted, but I wouldnt do any chnages until you decided what mix you are going to run, and have run it for at least 30 minutes.
