    83 250r making 60 hp?!

hey guys, i decieded to post this for the air cooled 'r guys, and anyone else who cares. i was skimming through ebay, and saw an air cooled 'drag 250r' that cranked out 60 hp! the description says its been ported and polished, turbo rod, and reed spacer, but i dont think that would give you more than 6-7 horses. is it possible to make a 250r crank out that much horsepower? what about small mods such as reed spacers, reeds, filters, and other do it yourself stuff to push it a little farther? whats the best you could do for under 200$? oh heres the link to this crazy 250r.

I know 60hp is possible with a water pumper. Never heard of an air cooler getting anywhere near that though.

It says "Fresh 60HP Engine".. that kind of makes me think that they put a new engine in it that is 60HP.. but thats just what it sounds like to me..

It says turbo CRANK, that blows past your $200 budget right there.

Hmmm... I dunno guys. This is an aircooler we're talking about. THey made like what, 28-30hp stock? Thats double the original horsepower without alcohol. I guess its possible but it seems highly unlikely.

I don't think that one has 60 hp. I think with the water cooled R's with a stroker and big bore from ESR or CT they claim like 70.

60 figured how? "Feels like 60" or did someone test it at 60? Does the word "dyno" show up anywhere? Sure it could make 60, thats not much horsepower. Just putting pieces on it doesnt make power though, it takes tuning.

From my August 83 issue of 3wheeling they did a test of the stock 83R motor and then installed a 300kit. The stock motor made 23.5 hp and the 300 kit made allmost 28. They then put a Kerker pipe on and got 29.5 hp out of the 300. That is with a stock carb rejetted with the jet that comes in the kit. My 81 300R probably puts out 31-32hp based on that since I have a Kerker pipe, 35mm carb, no airbox,a K&N and a bigger intake with a boost bottle. Another 28 horses would be hard to find. I think about 45 hp would be the limit.

Agreed, but the "mags" arent gonna give anyone that serious of a horsepower boost. so they can go out and kill themselves. The mags are out to help parts sellers sell parts that the average mechanic / rider can install. They are not going to give out professional tuning advice.

Its a matter of hp per cc (or CID). Look at the top fuel mechs, 10,000 hp + out of 600 inches (?)

You should actually read some of the old mags before you open your mouth. They tell how to build a full race 200x, 600cc snowmobile engine conversions for Odysseys, homebuilt 2 strokes etc. Remember, this was before all the CSPC stuff but maybe you're not old enough to remember.

And yes, 10,000hp from 600 cubic inches but with forced induction and methanol for fuel. I don't see a blower or turbo in any of the auction pictures.

I e-mailed him asking if it had a 300 big bore kit and this is what he told me.

(This bike is still a 250 bore. This motor makes awesome power. You have to spend big money to make a banshee out run it. The big cc four stroke drag bikes it has ran don't want any either.) I think he needs to wake up!!
