    Hmm.. head sheild??!

    Ok. I just got a used SuperTrapp exhaust off of eBay and I'm trying to fix it up. I got the silencer part all polished up and it looks like new. But now I'm trying to paint the header and stuff, and I can't get the heat sheild off. Does anyone have any tricks on getting this stupid thing off?? I tried heating up the screws, and all that did was make it harder because then I couldn't turn the screw because when I did, the metal moved along with the head of the screwdriver. So I'm taking it these things aren't meant for high temperatures. Now does anyone have any suggestions, tips, or tricks?

    I saw the picture.. that thing was RUSTAY....

    You may need to grind off the bolt heads and re-tap them suckers....
    Currently :

    82 ATC - 200, plain jane, almost mint. ( Sold, 03-17-2005)
    84 ATC - 200 ES, Jimmy-Rigged, don't ask.( Sold, 03-17-2005)
    85 ATC - 250 SX, Pride and Joy, Bottom-Less Money Pit.

    OH. another trick if you have a welder.

    Place a nut over the bolt.. the nut needs to have an inside diameter about the same size as the screw head... weld it on and use a wrench to twist it off while it's still hot.
    Currently :

    Bleh. I don't have any taps. Or a welder. I guess I'll have to see if my grandpa has any taps so I can do it. The rust on this thing comes off pretty easily.. alot easier than I figured it would. And my god the silencer was easy to polish up. Took about half an hour to get it all shined up.

    Lol.. yup. I'm very surprised in how nice the silencer cleaned up. The only thing really wrong with it is like 3 scratches on the end cap. And thats nothing.

    My suggestion is to actually drill it within so you leave a thin layer of the nut left. Then chase it out. Or I just cave them into themselves. This way you save your threads. By the time you remove that much of the nut it will be weak and want out anyway. leave a solid lip or partial head to be able to grab. Use left handed drill bits because sometimes they will just take care of the job for you. You only want to go as deep as the nut itself, so look up the nuts mm's for length and mark your drill bit to only go in that deep.
