The 1981 ATC 250R has arrived -UPDATED PICS

Picked it up today at the shipping terminal instead of waiting until tommorrow (just had to see it) Here she is --99% original with exception of the rear tires and grips.

Missing front sprocket cover and airbox.

The rear fender has a chunk out of it (I will buy a maier "Ouch it hurt to say it") until I get as lucky as Bruce and find NOS ....if ever.

How off is the red color on the Maiers for the 81/82 R's ?? Also the 81 maier front on ebay looked like it had vents (OEM has no vents)

Ive already found and purchased some cool NOS stuff including the original owners manual and service manual for the 81 R. This one is getting tucked away for a while because the parts acquistion will be a very long process.

    Just happy its here

Other smaller or lesser known companies, such as Tiger ATV, Franks, and Cagiva, produced racing three wheelers, but in much smaller numbers. Few of these machines are known to exist today and are highly sought by collectors.

Sweet, I have a soft spot in my heart for the first gen R's. It's nice to find an unmolested, original machine, isn't it?

The Maier red is a darker/deeper red compared to the stock fenders. You are right also that the Maier fronts have vents. IMO the vented one is better if you are going to ride it. I have a vintage Dirt Works front fender on mine that was brand new when I got it and is vented also. The color match ia pretty off but it goes good with all the other old school racing parts on the bike. The sprocket covers come up on ebay every once and a while and the 83-84 ones will not fit. Mike from Long Island has a 81 airbox that I know he won't be using so make him an offer. He got his 82 from me and it was missing the airbox so I put the leftover one from my 81 on it.

    Lots O Trikes!!!!!

Dang it..... this is the 3rd time...... here I type again!

Ok... NOS rear fenders are brighter red than the maroonish red Maier fenders. Fenders are staying put for now..... naybe a blockbuster trade in the future, but if I "liquidate", you and a couple few others will get first dibs.

OEM tire should be a Dunlop... I forget the KT part of it.... Cheng Chens (sp) are a great substitute knobbie unless you drag your R down I-70 at 60mph on it!

I actually have to agree with edog once..... more detailed pics please! Does it have the OEM rims? (3 bolt hubs with 3 bolts to hold the 2-piece rims ogether?) If so, I have an OEM rim here for a 81R.... fronts and rears are interchangeable. (same part numbers) I also have the OEM parts/service manuals on CD-Rom if you need a copy, shout! I also have hardcopy foreign parts schematics in a book too. 81R only... Austrailian..... 81-83R... from UK. Seems like the seat is missing the HONDA stencil on it?

Lets see..... I got a complete rear end for an 81R here, but it's a +4 or 6 axle and is already "spoken for". I bought a couple spare HD NASA axles for a 82R, but as you know, the splines for the rear disc 82 and rear drum 81 are different.

I can't wait to get my "Winter R" project going myself..... usung the 82R I bought at Trikefest, putting ther Pro-Wedge rear tires on it, the 300R head, Fairing, Tripmeter, and "Custom" Hondaline Footpeg covers. It was a studded icer once... has scapes under neath the old school drilled fron fender and a custom adaptor hub to run a naroow front tire with the rest of the 82R front end..... It also has a custom "safety" seat that says Honda on the back..... I missed an auction yesterday on ebay with school starting today, but hopefully I can strike a deal with the guy who got it!

Anyhow.... looks like you and Todd will have the nicest 81R's out there!

Orangecounty, when you get that restored I would love to br9ing mine by and get a picture of the 2 of them. I still need to install my Westcoast swingarm and extended axle though. If your bike is missing any little bollts or hangers let me know because I bought a whole hardware lot and have some left over. Those rear tires were an optoinal tire for the trikes but I don't know when they came out with them and Ohtsu's web site doesn't have the ATV section anymore. A good looking bike for sure that you got there. One word of advice is to be careful of the headlight switch. It is an 81 only item and is pretty hard to find.

Thanks all for the advice and help with parts. I went back out and just walked around and admired this thing for a while.

A photoshoot would be great 200xman. It should be restored by next summer. I was hoping that I would not have to do a restore on this maybe just detail it and throw on some new parts. Although its in great original shape for a 25 year old beauty (1/81 date of production) there are two many chips in the frame and discoloration throughout to keep me happy so a full restore will be done. I contacted Mike from vintage motorsports and I think he is going to paint and zinc plate some parts on this eventually. I have to finish the Z first ...then I'll get into this machine. I am definetly pleased I'll have the first and last model year R in my collection.

I went out and checked the rims, they are the original two piece with no scuffs or dents. The front tire is a cheng shin - a nice duplicate of the original as Bruce said. I bought one original tire (kt 221) off ebay (I need one more for the back). Not quite sure whats up with my seat missing the Honda stencil, Maybe it was recovered at some point? I also impulsively bought a NASA 82 R axle off ebay (BIN). It will go up for sale.. I'll have mine zinc plated. I'll take some more pics tommorrow or friday.
