Well Being that my 87 did that same thing periodically I may be able to help. Hook up a small hot wire to the positive post on the battery. Turn the key to the on position. Make sure your kill switch is in the RUN position. Take that hot wire I mentioned and touch it to the Yellow wire with the red stripe that is soldered on to the top of the solenoid. Not the big Wires that go to the solenoids post, the other two tiny wires on the top of the solenoid. I think there is a yellow with red stripe as mentioned, and a gread with a yellow stripe. Touch that hot wire to the yellow one. Mine would just out of the blew not work. I would turn the key on, the dash would light up, then I would hit the starter button and hear a click. Then the dash light woud go off. I would take that hot wire and touch it to that yellow wire on the solenoid, and it would instantly start turning over. Key on or off. It would turn over. Just have the key on when you do it. Should fire off hopefully. Mine wouldnt do it again for a long time. But out of the blue, it would happen again. So I just kept the hot wire hooked up for emergency use. I never could determine exactly what the problem was.
