    Exhaust repacking

Do older Bassani exhaust pipes ever need repacking on 4 strokes?

    Let's hear it.

Yes they do need to be repacked, i recomend doing it often (every 100 hours) and just using the cheep $10 sheet of packing. That way you keep on doing it and its easyer to pull appart. I change mine about every 8 or 9 monts.

What is involved when repacking the exhaust? I thought the part that got repacked was the spark arrestor and my bassani doesnt have one.

What does the packing in silencers do? Is it just to keep the noise levels down or is it suposed to try n catch most of the exess gas and oil?

The packing does several things one is cut down the sound, the other is give more power by giving a more direct route out. After a while it get cloged with carbon and the fiberglas brakes down. The dg's for 350x's need to have packing. you realy just have to play with them to get them to work loose. WD40 and a penetrating oil of your choice should help alot, The more dificult ones i normaly let the end soak in deissel (sp?) for a night then go to work.

Spark arrestors have nothing to do with packing, a spark arrestor is all about screaning out the exhaust so a flame or spark cant exit the exhaust.

Edog is right, you need to take the old core and make shure all the holes and everything is nice and cleand out, then you take the sheet of packing and wrap it around the core, and use wire of some sort to hold it onto the core.
