tri-z clutch problem

Hello, I'm a newbie here, but a long time visitor of 3WW. I just got a tri-Z, but the clutch will not disengage...heres what I[*]do[/*] know: cable is free, and adjusted fine. when I pull the clutch handle, the lever on the engine, which the cable hooks to, pulls all the way in, like it's supposed to. But heres whare I'm puzzled : the clutch is constantly engaged, if I pull the clutch handle, while not in neutral, the trike remains in gear, and pretty much immobile.

any help is greatly appreciated

P.S. I can ride without the clutch, but starting/stopping is not much fun, obviously

Do you feel clutch tension when you use the clutch lever?

Tri-z's have a clutch adjuster behind the right side clutch cover. Possibly that needs to be adjusted, or the clutch basket is grooved so bad they won't disengage.

If your in neutral with it running and clutch lever in when you click it down into first the engine will stall right?

and yes, if I'm in neutral, with it running and clutch lever in if I click it down into first, it will stall. (I try not to do this too much. I pop start it to get it going right now, not fun if it stalls at the bottom of a hill)

I had this whole not disengaging thing too with my Z.

You say that everything on the outside of the machine that has to do with the clutch is working properly. This means you'll have to go inside.

Take the clutch cover off, unscrew all the clutch spring bolts, pull the pressure plate, and all the clutch discs and fibres out.

There is probaly grooving in between the fingers of the clutch basket, it can be filed down if they are not too deep.

Use a feeler gauge to make sure the metal clutch discs are not warped.

Pull the shaft and ball out from the inside of the shaft. inspect them, make sure they're not worn.

Put it all back together, ajust the clutch properly, and try it then.

What happened to my Z clutch is that the ajuster screw got bent somehow, and this made the conecting shaft wear down really quick loosing clearance. But you said you could feel the springs compress when you pull the clutch so I would think it is grooving in your basket.

Did this just happen all of a sudden, or did it slowly get worse and worse?

I am not sure how this happened, I bought the trike about a week ago, and it was this way when I bought it. It had been sitting for a while, and the lady I bought it from knew nothing about it.
