    200X carb slide

Due to an issue with my idle, I recently purchased a new slide for my 1985 200X from servicehonda.com. My old slide had a few "dents" in it from the throttle stop screw.

The new slides doesn't fit that well and doesn't go all the way down in the carb body. Even with the throttle stop screw out, there's still a gap at the bottom of the carb. Also, the throttle action isn't as smooth...it feels like the slide is catching.

The only thing I noticed was the area where the cable connects to the slide is a bit tighter than my stocker; I really had to push the cable in there.

Any ideas? I looked up the part number on partsfish before ordering. As far as I know, only the 83 carb is different from the 84-85 model. For now, I'm using a spare used slide I have. I'm thinking of returning the new one I just purchased.

when i ordered my slide from service honda i called them up and gave them the Carb model #'s and they sent me the slide i needed and it fit perfect the reason i called them was because when using the parts fiche there were about 4 different slide letters a-d i beleive and i didnt know what slide to order you may have ordered or recieved the wrong slide i would call return the slide and call them with the carb #'s they are located just above the idle screw i beleive

Thanks! I think I'll give that a try. That certainly could explain things.

Here's a pic showing how the new slide will not seat properly:

Yes, they look almost the same. However, the cable slit on the new slide it a bit narrower.

New slide is on the left. You can see how it's slighly tappered at the bottom:

could just be the picture ... but they don't look the same.. the one on the right has a more beveled edge at the very bottom... the new one looks more square.

Take the old one . and buff it up with steel wool, clean the inside of the carb spiknspan and lightly coat it in oil.. i've sanded the idle screw taper before to smooth it out.. it's a tedious task and it's cramped. but can be done. with creative folding of sand paper !!

    Good eyes!

I called them last night and the cross ref'd the frame and engine numbers to make sure I had the correct slide. Turns out I do. I'll return it to them and they're determine if the slide is defective.

In hopes of getting the old slide to work.. don't forget to check the idle screw itself.. take it out of the carb.. lay it flat on a table and roll it along.. make sure the tip is perfectly cylindrical and centered and not wobly...

If it's out of round, you can carefully reshape it with 200 + grit sand paper and it should help.

Glen, in you first picture the slide looks ok to me. If the slide goes all the way down then how would any air get by it, I believe it is sitting normally there. In the second picture it looks like the new slide has a smaller diameter then the old one, is that just the picture? I really wish I had my carb here to look at right now.

I did that as a test because the slide action with the throttle was not smooth at all. Plus, with it not going down enough, I could not set the idle correctly. Hopefully, I'll hear from them next week. For now, the old spare slide will have to do. I may try that sandpaper trick. Getting a file in there is not easy at all.
