    Quick 250es Question...

    Will I need to pull the engine out of the frame to remove the head and the cylinder? Or can they boh be pulled off with the motor in the frame?

    The top end can be removed without pulling the motor. But you have to pull the long studs out to do this. I know it's a pain either way.

    does the jug come off on the right or the left side !!

    if you remove SOME of the frame bolts.. not all . the motor will move a bit, I don't know if this would help the situation any...

    When i went into the bottom end to replace the shift shaft pins on my SX i had to puch the tranny up a half inch to remove the sidecover... same idea. tight fit. but do-able.

    I would like to know wich side the cylinder comes out if i ever.. or lets say WHEN i have to get into that job !! ( needing a new timing chain soon )

    I have tried a couple times, and I failed each time. It you can do it without pulling the studs your better than me. Now that you confirm it can be done I want to try it again just to see it done. argggg

    I've had the swingarm off enough times on my SX that removing the bearing carrier and axle and diff takes me no more than 20 minutes !!! lol....

    When i do the timing chain, i'm putting in a webcam, new valves, seals, etc.. new piston and rings, and depending on the cylinder condition... might get a bore job with a 10.5 : 1 ....

    Clutch comes first tho.

    The very worst part of pulling the motor imo is the drive shaft. Both coming out and going back in. I think this is true with any drive shaft modle 3 or 4 wheels.

    John, since reading this I realized I miss understood your first reply. You were saying you could remove the head & valve cover without pulling the motor or studs. I assumed you meant the whole topend ( Cylinder, head, and valve cover ). I was thinking to myself there is No way in "nice" to pull the cylinder off without pulling the motor or studs. argg

    To get the cylinder off you must either pull the motor or remove the studs that hold the vavle cover / head / cylinder to the bottom end.

    To me removing the 4 studs is a lot less work then trying to pull the whole motor to replace the piston / rings. I would rather install the 4 studs than to fight to line up the drive shaft / motor mounts.

    What tool would be best to use to remove the studs? Or should I screw 2 nuts onto the top of the thread of each stud and back them into each other and do it that way?

    Beautiful, thanks a million John. Well I have the 2 upper parts off, they both look fine, just alot of carbon buildup. Nothing is burnt up or worn excessively. I am now down the pulling the studs, that jug looks like it will come off but it just wont fit!

    I will see how I go with these studs. I will let you know how it goes.

    Ok. I got the two left studs out (as you sit on the seat) The other two are way to stubborn, however, the jug comes off with just those two removed. So the jug is now off. I really cant see how this motor just died. The only thing i can see that is worn a bit is the rocker housing where the cam sits, its a tiny tiny bit worn. I think the rings are just toast, and i should be able to just get away with a fresh set of rings. We will have to see. The other thing that is annoying me is trying to get the rockers out of their casing. I have got those two dowels out (solid metal) that hold in the rocker pinion. You can get one of the pinions out, however there is no access from behind for the other one to be pushed out. I have done this before but for the life of me cannot remember how...Does anyone know any tricks to getting it out?

    On a lot of the rocker pins / dowels they are threaded on the inside. Just screw in a bolt and pull it out. Hope that helps.

    Got them out using vice grips in the end. What a job that was! I cleaned it and reassembled and it still ahs no compression, time for new rings i think.

    Did you check the ring end gap to se if they are within specs? I would also check your cylinder for out of roundness also. I only say this because if it's out of round a new set of rings won't give you the good compression that your looking for.

    Hey Howdy. I dont have a micrometer or any measuring tools so I will take it down to the local motorcycle shop and see what they make of it.
