    84 125m drin plug threads and spark plug threads gone...options??

    Well, The threads on my 84 125m are gone on the head/ spark plug hole and the main drain plug. What is the cheapest BEST fix? Heli-coil them? I am not too worried about the drain plug as of yet so I was wondering if I should maybe heli-coil the head because I dont want to have to bore out a new/used one.

    What are my options? If you have one (or any parts I need let me know)

    Also, If i get luck and can buy a "new" motor is the clymer the best manual of the swap or what??

    If you dont mind taking the head off - a helicoil is Perfect - Take the plug to any autoparts store and show it to the guy at the counter. Im also an auto mechanic, and I cant even remember how many of these Ive done succesfully. While youre at it - take him the drain plug too--Just make sure you FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS ON THE PACKAGE" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    I havent looked at taking the head off...it doesnt look terribly bad, but IDK. Any one ever taken one off??? It looks like timing and everything has to be disassembled too to get the head off.

    The drain plug itself is fine....the threads it threads into are shot. Ill eventually get around to doing that...but I dont feel like lugging an entire motor to a guy......I really just would like a "new" motor for this thing!!

    Head removal isnt MANDATORY-but will make life much easier-
    You only have to lug the plug to the parts store-he doesnt need to see the whole head ,
    engine or bike

    Oh..lol I see. I have heard head removal isnt mandatory, but how much metal shaving would get in there?? Also I have heard heli-coils vibrate out after time?? Is that true?? When I get my manual, It will make my final decision much easier too...

    Yes some metal shavings will get in there. fill with water and crank it over repeatedly (With the plug out of course) until no more water comes out. that will flush out any shavings left over. as far as Vibe-ing out-, use a spot of threadlock-and it shouldnt be any worse than a plug shaking out. it happens-cant change Physics.

    Yikes! Take the head off, the water it's going to keep a piece from potentialy getting lodged and ruining stuff.

    I find helicoils are a chance because sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I had one put in my ski doo and it kept blowing out and hitting the hood. I just switched heads. I also have a ct70 with a helicoil in it and have never had a problem.

    Hmm ok. I dont think Ill try the water thing. If I decide to get a rebore does that neccesarily mean I need to get a new piston and rings or if the wear is about even on both can I simply just swap them out??

    Also...when you install the new heli-coil...can you accidently put it in too "deep". I mean its holding a plug, and I was wondering if you could put it in accidently so deep, that it may cause a problem like not enough clearance for the piston??
