Question About Exhaust Port From Engine

I took the exhaust off the beast(1985 Tri Z 250) and noticed a lot of oil looking stuff right under the exhaust port
What should I do, Do I just try to clean it up and put on the new exhaust, or do I have a problem in the engine since this oil looking stuff is leaking out the exhaust port . Also, is there a way I can tell if this is indeed a true TRI-Z 250? I'm seeing yellow writing on the engine that says 1985 Tri Z, like it was an engine sitting somewhere on a shelf and they wrote on it to tell what it was . The swingarm looks funny, compared to the one on partsfish for this model. It has a aluminum type bar on the bottom, looks like it is some type of reinforcement of some type . I really don't know what these beast are suppose to look like, so I can't tell if I have a Tri-Z or something else with a Tri Z motor in it

if it is sort of sticky and goopy it is an exauhst leek you can clean it up with some degreaser. it looks like a leek between the exauhst flange and pipe you can get sealent tape from dennis kirk.

Holy crap PLEASE give that thing a bath Yamaha uses a pretty wierd seal right there but you could get a normal crush type seal and some RVT and seal it right back up. The bad thing about these cylinders is that the pipe will vibrate on the flange and make it out of round.

I plan on restoring it to showroom new, but I haven't had a chance to give it a good bath..

If you ever take the pipe off a TriZ and dont see all that crap there, there is something wrong with it! RTV will help, but nothing will cure this problem.

In additioon to what YTZ250N said, the exhaust flange off the cylinder will begin to form a small lip on the inside which will actually start to make the opening smaller. I just ground mine out, and polished up the exhaust port.

some oil seepage is normal over time. looks like yours hasn't been cleaned in a while. when you reinstall the pipe use some hi temp rtv sealant and be sure to let it dry overnight before starting the trike. you can also switch to a different oil. one that burns cleaner. something like castrol TTS, klotz, or motul. the maxima line of oils are also good, however, their oil blend was developed by castrol and your getting the same oils, just at a higher price.
