    86 R Throttle Cable

Apparently my throttle cable is about an inch too long. I have used all of the adjustment at the carb and throttle and the slide still likes about 1/8th" opening all the way. I have temporarily ziptied the throttle cable on the outside of the throttle arm to get almost full opening of the slide. Is an 85 cable shorter? This cable is near new per previous owner (3leggeddog). The top female adjuster on the carb end of the cable is stripped.

Cable off a used 85 PJ is 39 7/8" from end to end of the sheath (end of threads) and 43 3/8" from end of the smaller tip to the center of the larger one. I have no idea whether its stretched, but do know it fits on the 86 thumb throttle assy because I had it hooked up and operating.

Lacking 1/8" opening isnt much, I doubt youd get a lot more airflow opening it up completely.

My bad, there was enough adjustment, I just got in from taking the time to take the tank off and look it over good. It is adjusted right, now. It is just barely long enough though. The first adjustment on the carb end (the one on top) is barely seated over the male adjustment part, hope it's ok, and not gonna chew away at the cable, we'll see.

a quality shop can shorten it. cut the end off, & solder on a new end. I bought a new end and did it myself fo less than a dollar.

from my local shop. my dad was a motorcycle mechanic in the late 60's and 70's and this was very common back then. the shop here had a kit from motion-pro with all sorts of different ends/ sleeves. maybe try small motorcycle or chopper shops that have been around for awhile.

as long as it is straight pull (like a 250r with a slide) the solder job doesn't have to be picture perfect. if it has pulley linkage (like a 350x with butterfly and slide) the solder has to be at the end only. if not the cable will not remain flexible at the very end (1/4 to 3/8 inch).
also don't bubble/puddle/booger up the solder on the end ferrule, it has to slip thru the carb cap. you can file it down if it does happen.
my twist throttle is custom made this way, with mikuni carbs.
