If your old basket had grooves worn into it from the clutch plates, then definitely it would improve clutch action & shifting to throw in a new basket. But if you're comparing a decent factory clutch basket to a new billet clutch basket, then I doubt you'll notice any shifting improvements. The billet units are usually hard anodized, depending on the brand, which makes them more resistant, but not impervious, to grooving. Being machined out of a solid aluminum billet also makes them stronger than a factory cast clutch basket. As far as being lighter, I've personally never heard that before. I know the main selling point is that they're stronger.

Ive beat the living (yu no wut) out of the stock basket and its held fine, but the grooves make it hard to shift, even though I filed them down. Make sure that pushrod on glass to make sure its not bent and the mushroom or ball isnt damgaged. Also, when the pushrod is out, lift the little lever out of the left side case and stuff some grease down in those needle bearings, if theyre rusted, it doesnt help.
