Can ATC Drums be Turned?

I was just wondering if ATC drums can be turned.... I have a rear drum from my 185S, and it was blasted on the outside only to get the junk off it, but the inside is grooved.... This is the drum that mounts to splines on the rear axle by the way. I also have a front wheel drum that is slightly grooved, it mount to the wheel using three bolts. Besides buying new drums, which I'm not opposed to doing for my restoration, what are my other options?

They might be machenable....the manuel would have thickness specs for them too see if you can or not...but for an atc drum it should fit on the brake lath, take 1 or 2 thou off it should clean it up some.

Yeah should be OK as long as you take the minimum off , I,d do them for you but shipping them over to Wales and back would be a touch expensive lol!!!

How does it fit on the lathe though, do they have a splined adapter for the rear and an adapter with a bolt-up flange for the front drum/?

I did mine on our brake lathe at work. I mounts onto the lathe shaft sandwitched between an alignment block (to eliminate runout) and a cone (to keep it centered). Any auto shop ought to be able to do it for less than 5 bucks a drum.

I also remember there used to be a guy on Ebay selling 1mm oversized shoes for the drum brake Hondas. It was supposed to make up for the wear. Cant hurt to check.

I've done a few of them at the shop where I work , Mixed results, They can be a bit tuff to " center -up" If its not a rare piece, or you have a spare, then yes auto shops can do it. Just dont try it with something thats really hard to find--(But if it was easy to find--you would just replace it wouldnt ya????)

So... assuming they had a tapered cone, it should center up fine I guess, eh? I called the local Ducati shop and they recommended their "usual guy" for the job. If the Ducati guys trust them with their older bikes, then I won't hesitate. I will let you know how it goes... Might be next week sometime. Thanks everyone! James
