i would go with the 250x over the 300. the stroke was shorter in the 250x and the compression is higher. this made the 250x rev a little better than the 300.plus the reverse is way easier to use on the 250x.and the 250x is lighter than the 300.speed wise, the 250 will keep up with a 300ex thru 3rd gear.the 300 was not much faster.plus i like the kickstart over a battery deal. all parts will change over but the front wheels on the 87and 88 250x had a larger bolt pattern than the 91and 92 250x and 300exs.so the 87 -88 front rims only fit the 87-88 250x front hubs.91and92 250x switched over to the 300ex front hubs.allthat was different was the bolt spacing.the hubs however will fit all years.so dont think you will put 300ex front wheels on 87-88 250x front hubs unless you switch the hubs too.
Here is where my long useless list of stuff nobody cares about should go...

Mechanically, the one big advantage the 250X had over the 300EX is the 36mm carb vs the 32mm. The weight difference is minimal.

Im sorry i didnt mean just a turbo would boost the HP to like 50 it takes porting & plolishing and much more extensive work to get it to 50Hp but it does.

    I've been a woods rider for life and I'd take the non-reverse 400ex over a 250x/300ex anyday!

No, the 250x can't make 50hp...no matter what. My dr650 makes a mild 37hp from the factory. The honda xr650r (the one they race in baja) makes about 50hp. The crf450 makes about the same I believe?

I dont know if I would say can't, I've never done it, but im sure it can be done. It may not be worth spending the money, and i certainly wouldn't, but i bet it could be done.

The 250x bottom end wouldn't handle 50hp even if you could squeeze it out of that jug. You're talking about a 150+% hp increase

TC racing build a 250x engine thats bored and stroked out to a 368cc that puts out around 45 horsepower. my friend raced one in the mid 90's. he never had tranny problems

    TC's 475cc 350x motor puts out 55 to 60 horsepower.

my friend now has a yz 426 in a 250r quad thats built and put out around 60 horses. Tc makes a 520cc 350x motor that a guy he raced flat track agianst had and he could not hang with him. the guy wooped him every time.

id go with the 300ex. my friend has an 03 300ex, and its pretty torqey for its size.

we drag race all of the time, he has a 300$ pro circuit exhaust on it, which made a HUGE! difference. before the slip on, he was way behind, now if i let up he can keep up.

but if i ride the 250r like i should, hes no where in sight.
the ex is a fun bike though. the suspention is crap, and its a little too narrow for my liking. other than that its fun.

i ended up getting an 89 Mojave, it was free, and it is a decent setup, strong engine reverse nice suspension. I'm fairly happy with it, but the shift rod has broke and i was quoted about $800 for repair, and the front end bushing are all shot. so it will be a while.
