    1984 Yamaha YTM225DXL

    Working on a buddies 84 3 wheeler, and he has his shift shaft broken, and wants a new one put in. How do you do this, you can't slide it out through the primary cover, and I was thinking you have to split the cases, does anyone have an idea on how to replace this.

    Mabey, you guys can help me identify this thing also, because I looked though the spec sheets, and can't find it. Here is everything I know about it. 5 speed auto clutch, Front telescoping shocks, shaft drive, electric start with recoil back up, and the guy claims it is a 250. so if you guys have any idea what this thing is let me know, because we are going to work on it on wednesday, and I would like to know what I am going up agnist.     Little trouble understanding what your working on here. The YZ is a dirtbike. The YTZ or Tri-Z wasn't made until 1985. Regardless, if it's a 2 stroke, the bottom end is very similar. Never paid any attention when I was in mine, but most shift shafts I've seen travel all the way thru the engine and are removable from the clutch side.

    Sorry if it is a bike, but the unit I have is a 3wheeler, so anyway, I pulled the primary case off, and looked inside it, and it looked like there was something in the was, so the welded part couldn't come off that side, hang on it wouldn't come out the center either, then you wouldn't have to split the cases, so there must be some way to pull it out the primary cover side right??, so mabey if I turn it or something it might come out?? Other wise help me out and look on bike bandit under a 84 225 shaft driven yamaha 3 wheeler. Thanks

    its a 1984 225 dx yamaha, just like the one in my sig. its a threewheeler, not a dirtbike.

    If there is no rear suspension (you never said), it isn't a DX. It would be a YTM 200E, 1983-86.
    I've never had to mess with the shift shaft, but I'm pretty sure you have to split the cases.

    It doesn't have rear suspension, anyway, do you really have to split the cases??
