Thread: 200s - could a rectifier & regulator, parts from radio shack be installed?

    Lightbulb 200s - could a rectifier & regulator, parts from radio shack be installed?

    instead of having to pay alot of money for a battery conversion kit for my 200s motor?......... i went too radio shack the other day and saw these rectifiers & v/regulators and thought maybe just maybe it could be wired in correctly to do the job on a 200s battery conversion.....but id have to know which rectifier/regulator too use....they have several to choice from....... or do they have to be that specific kind to go to that motor? heres some pics and one of the (200s v/reg-rectifier)..........i could add a heat sink to that v/reg from shack ....that might be all ill need if it could work...............

    Hook those two parts up, rev the engine a little and watch the smoke pour out. Itll work till the smoke quits. If you try to build such a thing, WEAR SAFETY GLASSES!

    And thats not a regulator/ rectifier. Its only an AC regulator.

    ook i get it...... thanks was wurth the shot to ask.....now i have to shop for the one that goes to the proper conversion....could *Edited* answer me one more question since no-one did on the wires going too a rickystator on 200s ....which way do the yellow wire and green wire go soldered on the stator......or it doesnt matter.....

    Stator wires are AC and have no polarity

    Oh- hang on, I may have made a mistake about that regulator, it looks like it has too many wires for just a regulator. The 200S wiring diagram doesnt show a regulator. The systems like the 250R have just a AC regulator. It only needs two wires to be an AC regulator, but 3 or more might be both reg and rectifier.

    Look at the wiring diagram from teh cycle that unit came from.

    Trike regulators are shunt regulators, meaning that they conduct spikes above 12 volts to ground. Three terminal regulators are pass regulators, different things. But I like the way You think !

    Hmmm, how did you know that? We have some electronic types lurking on the board.... Not only a cool screen name, but useful knowlege!

    Seroiusly, those pass regulators can turn into hand grenades and take an eye out. Ive had pieces of similar transistors smack me in the face at high speeds.

    well thanks guys....

    but im sure i want both my eyes and really dont have time too tinker with a busted idea.....ill be slappen in the correct regulator to help run a battery....

    Even if the radio shack one was the correct type, it does not have enough heat sink to handle the power dissipation. I agree it would grenade!!

    Question -?-

    how do you check a reg/rect.? cuase i dont think the 1 i bought used, doesnt work.....

    another thing, how would a reg/rect work on 200s charging set-up w/battery?

    the battery i bought is a gel-sealed acid battery and im trying to connect it to the charging unit of the 200s motor and using the reg/rect w/batt.....but will the charging unit in the 200s motor over charge my battery or will it like trickle charge at a certain time? i dont want to fry my battery ..... im also planning to use a 10amp inline fuse out to my lights............yall guys have any insight to a battery conversion too help me out................

    where are you going to mount the battery? I have the wires for a battery on my 200 but dont know where to mount the battery

    Arrow where i plan too mount the battery.....

    i dont have the motor in the stock atc bike i converted it, into a midsize super bike but i plan to mount the battery in front of the motor where it could stay cool away from heat also where i dont have to route extra wires cuase in front is where ive mounted the most of my wiring .....................

    does anyone have the answers too my questions............well i tried to see if i could get any polarity going thru the reg/rect useing the battery and a test light and its weird it seems to get some when i connect one of the yellow wires too the positive terminal of batt. and then connected the test light too the red wire off the reg/rect and ground it too the batt and i have light ...soo its going thru i guess (working).....so i figure i could just use the red and 1 yellow of the wires coming off of the reg/rect i bought in order to use it the way i need too....i guess the yellow wire could be connected to the yellow lighting coil wire off the motor and the red too the batt and then route also the battery red terminal to the lights ect.......then ground the batteries ground and all other ground too the frame................ill draw out my wiring diagram for this as soon as i do ill post it
