If a motor has been sitting for years.....

Does it have to be bored or is there any chance you could get away with hone and new rings? I just pulled the top end off a 2 stroke motor that has been sitting covered for a number of years. Everything looked good except that a good amount of surface rust was around the jug of the cylinder with the piston in the lower position. $200 for piston kit is almost not worth it. I dont own a honing machine, but is that what I would need to do to find out if I need to bore? Clean it up, check specs, and look for gouges?

Yeah I would just pull it and clean it up and see. If all it has been doing is sitting up its worth a shot before you go spending alot of money, not like there is too much involved in a top end of a 2 stroke.

cool, i'll buy the tool to hone it up and buy some rings. $200 for a piston kit is alot to spend on a turd.

you need to bore it if not you will have to tear down and rebuild in a week go ahead and bore it that was how my old 200x was and i only honed it and then the damn thing didnt run right so you should bore it .10 over what it is now and clean it up right

cleaning it up and trying it is free... if it fails to run the way you want it to run.. then do the whole deal with bore job etc..

if it's a turd as you say.. i would not spend any more money than needed for the time being.

the carb will probably need a good clean, as well as the gas tank and air filter.. with new plug.. etc.. thes standard 9 yards.

How much " surface rust " are we talking about here ?

Also what is it off of? Certain cylinders can't be bored or honed for that matter. If it doesn't look ok after you hone it, that is if you can hone it, I would bore/replate the cylinder because if you are not 100% sure that it is perfect you just wasted 200 bucks on a piston that isn't going to do a thing. Then another 200 on top of getting it bored out. Just my thoughts

it costs you 200 dollers to get it bored out, my local shot that fixes and sells parts for atvs bores them out for either 35 or 40 bucks a cyl

try starting it before you throw money into it. My snowmobile sat for 23 years! 10 pulls and it started. Just need to buy a fuel pump now.

And my friends ATC110 was setting for 5 years unran, got that going with minial work and he is running that.

The Guy that first bought my BIG red after it sat for about 10 years started it right up and it runs great once it starts.

the pistons were rusted in there pretty good. then the crank wouldn't move, after some lube and oil i could almost get the crank to spin half way. Now we're in deep, pulling the whole motor apart to see what the crank is able to be salvaged, it must've gotten condensation inside and froze. This sucks. Oh this is on a skidoo sled, but it's my first two stroke, and figured the questions were general enough for everyone to benefit. When we got it, the rope wouldn't pull do to the pistons being froze. A bore is definitely in the works to say the least, it all depends on how much this guy wants to spend on it, I think he'll do it right. If I find our camera tomorrow i'll take pics and you can all give me your opinions.

Tho it is unadvisable, i have run a sled like this( just a junker we found by the river) worked good for a while....lol get it in the warm theres gona be BIG chunkc of ice in there, we filled up the crank with diesel in a warm garage for a few days that freed it up, preced to put the top end back on and started it...lol

I can top that I parked my 1986 250sx in 1989 after my cousin was killed in a trike accident. 15 years later (2004) when I grew up and realized my cousin would have died had he been on a quad, dirt bike, or bicycle, I changed the oil, cleaned the carb, ran gas from a plastic gas can(Gravity feed) started on second kick. Its the one in my avatar. Runs better than before when it was Brand new straight from the showroom. (It was my 14th birthday present) I pulled a 1982 atc 110 that literally had 2 trees growing on either side that had pushed so tight it dented the gas tank from behind an elderly gentlemans barn. Same senario. 2 pulls and it was running although I spent a small fortune finding plastics, seat, exhaust, etc.
