200x finally together but problem with high idle

Ok, finally got the 200x all fixed up, shock was rebuilt, all bearings checked on entire chasis, couple new things here and there, both brake calipers rebuilt completely. All together, started it up, idles like a mother #$^&*@. It idles very high, like very very high. Carb was completely rebuilt, all new jets, needle, everything, all cleaned out too, put together correctly, slide in correctly, throttle cable has plenty of slack, no air leaks at all around carb/intake, adjusted the valves, timing is spot on, good spark plug, good spark. Let me explain the idle, the trike will run only with the choke on, as soon as I turn it to the middle or no choke it'll sputter and still even after engine is warm. The idle is very high between shifts when I pull the clutch in as well. It starts ok runs ok, just idles so high it scares me, adjusting the idle set screw doesn't help, and the slide in the carb doesn't have any nicks in it where the scew rests, also the pilot screw adjustment doesn't help. I'm thinking the carb is outta-wack with the jetting because I didn't have this problem before rebuilding the carb, it wouldn't idle at all then, but why wouldn't it idle correctly with the stock sized jets which is what the new ones are. Help me please!!!!

Edit: Forgot to mention it'll stall when I turn off the choke even after the engine is very warmed up adequately.

Sounds like its starving for fuel. Does it back fire when you let off the gas. Does it have good power when you get on it?

It has good power when the choke is on but it won't go far, then with the choke off it won't go anywhere, especially when it's fully off it'll sputter and die.

Make sure you didn't put the carb slide in the wrong way. It's possible to put it in backwards and not have it go down far enough in the carb body.

Why did you put in new jets? Try putting in the old ones and see if it runs ok. If it does then you know that you have a jetting problem.

New jets because before it wouldn't idle at all unless you gave it at least a quarter throttle, the jets were replaced because they were flooding the engine up as well, the needle was so worn and the hole it slides into as well, so after the rebuild it idles high as hell, I am going to try that though just to see if that's the problem to make sure I didn't mess anything else up. Thanks for the tip. I'll keep you guys posted.

Did you put the same size jets back in? sounds like your your carb just need'd adjusting, im thinking you put a leaner pilot jet/ or your floats are set wrong. or your slide is in backwards....

check your float level and if its good you can try moving the needle in the slide if its an adjustable needle, that will affect power while its under load. dont change the pilot jet size from stock unless you have engine mods such as a big bore kit for example. how much smaller did you go on the new jet? if your needle was worn it would make it run rich for sure. alot of carbs have a couple of slots for the clip on the needle, if you move the clip to a lower groove it raises the needle in the slide and richens the mixture in the mid and upper rpm ranges if you lower the needle by moving the clip up it will lean you out some in the same ranges. this should not affect your idle however. float level can mess with your idle alot though, so i would say check that , and try your old jet, see where it gets you and then maybe play with the needle some. also if there is a mixture screw find out from a shop where the starting point for adjusting is for it. good luck.

Is the needle clip still attatched-----If it fell off --the needle retracts into the slide leaving the jet uncovered----

What did you do to clean the carb? Did you just spray it out real well or did you get a can of carb dip and immerse it overnight. If you just sprayed it out real well you might have lodged a bit of crud into an air passage. The air passages are small and clog easy. Did you put the float bowl gasket on correctly, this can clog up an air passage. Also, Did you have the right year rebuild kit, sometimes the kits aren't as universal as they say they are? Not trying to attack you or what you did, just asking questions about potential problems.

Yeh the rebuild kit was for the right year, the new jets were all the same size as the old ones and were genuine keihin parts, they had the sizes stamped on them and they matched the old ones, same pilot, main, and needle sizes, except they were new. Anyway later today I'm going out to put the old stuff back in to start troubleshooting this thing one thing at a time. Oh yeh to clean the carb I had it completely apart scrubbed it with carb & choke cleaner with a toothbrush, made sure all passages were open with compressed air gun, new float gasket on correctly, slide is in correctly, I'll let you guys know what happens after I put the old stuff back in.
