I run Microsoft anti-spyware and AVG Virus protection, both are free and work great.

As far as getting rid of the crap you already have... you should just go ahead and take it to your local computer repair shop... they'll clean it up for you. And you can ask them to put AVG and Microsoft anti-spyware while you're there.

if you have a non-legal version of windows.. the microsoft anti-spyware will not work as it does a product key check..

but ad-aware is a good one.. as well as the above suggestions.

Read, read, read. That's the best way to know what you're dealing with. As this site is the place to learn about trikes, there are many other sites with thousands of members, sometimes tens of thousands of members, from all over the world that have experience with the things you have never seen before. One of the best spyware programs that I have used is EWIDO, it picks up tons of stuff that other programs do not including spybot, and adaware, however I do run all three usually. You can search on dogpile and find ewido with a 14 day trial, before you need to purchase or crack what ever you like

Once cleaned of viruses and spyware do not use Internet Explorer anymore, instead use Mozilla's Firefox. You'll thank me later!

If you really want the bulletproof browser, go with Opera. FF is great and I've been using it since 0.8 Beta, but it's popularity is growing and so is the target on its back. I'd still recommend it to everyone instead of IE though.
