    Suzuki TS185...Problems Thread

Alright my mate just bought a Suzuki TS185..

He wants to know some answers to some questions...
    (Copy and pasted from email..)

I was wondering where the idle screw is on the carb and how do I drain the old oil out of the oil tank and what to put in it, and do I need to change the transmission fluids?

    Cheers.

I found out how to fix the idle and how to remove the oil tank, it's full to the top with oil. I shouldn't need to take all of this out and put new stuff in should I? Anyone have an idea where I can find the gearbox drain and fill?

Drain should be a bolt on the bottm of the motor, fill on the right side i do belive.

Are there oil filters on these bikes? On the right side there is a kind of red plug that has a little pointy thing sticking up, is that the proper plug or did somone just stick that in there?

    Thanks!

No filtres, i have no idea on the fill plug i would have to see it, make sure you dont put to much oil in, there should be a Phillips head screw or bolt by the kickstart or near the front of the motor that pop's out when you fill the oil, when the level is right oil will come out of it.

Thanks, I tugged on the plug and it came out, it was just being used as a stopper. The air filter is worn out and it'd be really expensive to find the air filter for it, can I put a uni-filter on it aslong as it matches up to the carb?

Dont quote me on this...But I think you would need to change jetting.

Making it richer right? More air = a leaner mixture?

Running an open uni, is it in the Air box or no? i woudnt run a Uni Without an airbox....But it will lean out the jetting, you May have to richen it up a little bit, but chence's are its running Real rich as is....Just run a plug chop n see to get you in the ball park, after running WOT in top gear kill it, take the plug out, it should be a paper bag brown colour, Black=too rich, White=To lean..

You can buy Uni foam material and cut it yourself as a replacement and use the stock airbox, and Id highly doubt youd have to mess with jetting, unless you are doing away with the airbox. I dont recommend a clamp on in place of the airbox because of its location unless youre a dessert rider. Also, its not going to do much for it anyways for performance, as the weak link in the TS breathing system is the pipe. My TS185 is a '72 model.

I'd be running it without the airbox, just clamped onto the carb. I ride on mud or grass, would there still be a problem with that getting into the engine or you just mean that the uni might get trashed fast? It makes a real loud BWAAAAPPP when you accelerate with the uni on. Is there anything you can do about the pipe?

I just noticed that it's actually a TC185, not sure if that means anything

Get the Air box, with just that uni your gona trash your motor from all the Mud/dust/*Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited* that gets in there, or at least run a K&N with an Outwear on it.

Oh whops I didn't realize that there was a difference in filter material. I was thinking of a K&N style air filter and I'll get an outwear for it. You happen to know where the bolt is where I unscrew to find out how much gearbox oil to put in? The one where it leaks out when you've got it at the proper amount. Should I use 10-40?

I used the origional airbox and bought new air filter foam and cleaned everything up. I realized like you guys said that the uni filter or whatever is right in the path of flying mud and water. Changed the gearbox oil and put in motorcycle 10-40, shifts are much nicer. I bought new grips but the ones on this bike need a special one for the twist throttle.
