    i need some opinions on a 86 triz 250!!!

I have been wanting to get a honda atc 250r, but i came across a 1986 yamaha tri-z 250. Topend was rebuit in may and it is ported&polished and bored over...the guy wants $1000.. i was just wondering if that would be a good deal? thanks

If the Tri Z is running right...you will love it over the R. The R has little bottom end but a good mid range. Z's (esp the 86 have phenominal low and a strong mid).

Stock for stock they are close but the R has a bigger hit in the middle BUT at the expense of low end. The Z is better all around motor in terms of power.

Add a bigger carb and some porting and its up to any task. The R will allow you better part availability and engine mods however.

    Its just up to you.

I have both bikes and I can tell you that its alot close than Dirt Wheels made it out to be. I think the '86 Z is superior....(not taking into account part availability).

The tri-z is a lot sexier too

There are a fair amount of parts available for the Z...Oldschoolin86 can build you a swing arm that uses a 400ex rear end so you have more axle, hub, tire choices. I'm having one made

If someone would tell me what front axle/hub fits on the Z, I would buy one, because I want more rim and tire choices.

A Yamaha warrior shock will bolt right on...

A YZ 250 top end fits on the bottom end, you get a powervalve that way and you can have a better selection of reeds and cages, pistons, etc

Actually, I think the whole YZ motor will bolt right in...So yea...There's not a lack in aftermarket parts by any means.

85/86 ATC250R. Use the Z axle and spacers with the 250R hub, disc, & rim. I had to space the z caliper over to center it on the R disc. I think it was about 3/16" or 1/4" I had to space it.
