Small Block Ford Cam Selection Issues...

I am soon going to rebuild a 351 windsor with new, racing parts. My setup will be suercharged with stock displacement. My problem is that picking out a cam is so difficult. There are so many to pick from! Does anyone know of an application chart to help me pick out the right one? Does such a thing exist?

Get a cam that is designed for a supercharger, there is a special pattern.

Are you going to build a full out race engine that revvs out, or more of a street engine that has good power all the way around, what type of supercharger? Roots or centrifigual. Id go for a cam that ahs some duration to it, keep that intake valve open a little longer to take advantage of the supercharger, Id stay away from the huge lift cams anything above .520+ (unless you are going for high rpms and top end power, which would defeat the purpose of the supercharger) both jegs and summit racing have blower cams in stock...Are you looking for hydraulic or Mechnical tppets with or with out rollers?

This may be a good start

That cam is for a small block 302, although I do know the 351 windsor cams slip into the 302 motor, changing the firing order a bit. (a normal 302 fires on the top two cylinders first, which makes some wear and tear.) My bud with a 67 mustang made the swap and it runs awesome.

Looks like this would give a awesome mid range hit, but its hard to tell untill you give all the specs about your motor. Id pm blown331 on here also, he has a supercharged stroked 302 to a 331.

200X Basket, that notch is sinister.

89 GT, I have always had good luck with Competition Cams. You can call their tech line, 800-CAM-HELP, and they can get you in the ballpark. You could always go from there.

The best thing you cna do short of a custom grind like 200xbasket suggested is plan out your motor without the cam, you want to know your heads flow characteristics, chamber, displacement, rod length, ignition, fuel supply, transmission type, converter, gears, everything you cant hink of and then call the cam companies. They know what you need, and with the right info, the will get you the best cam for your application.

I want it to be streetable, and I am not interested in reving above 6500. I won't be shy about power though. I did manage to find a chart in a summit racing catalogue that gives the duration for what I need. If you go to the summit website, they will allow you to choose the duration you like (but no chart)

to get all teh power out of a custom engine you need a custom cam. are you still EFI? if so then you dont want to spin past 6250 since that is the factory rev limiter. the cam is the heart of an engine and needs the extra $$$ spent on it. jsut think for an extra $150 or so you can get all the HP out of your car. your tail pipes cost more then that. let the experts make the cam.

I live in Pensacola, Florida. I must confess, the 351 is still as stock as ever with a carbureted manifold. I do plan to go EFI, but with an MSD ignition. I don't have any parts yet, as I have been saving money, talking with people, reading other's dyno results, shopping etc. My brother's best friend races 6.0 brake-out. He has given Jon (bro) alot of useful information. Jon told me to go with an off-the-shelf cam because he knew of people that had bad experiences with them (and better luck with an off-the-shelf cam). I tend to agree with you guys- which brings me to another question. If I order a stock grind from say... Comp Cams, can I get them to just give me the stats of the cam? That way I could shop around to see just how similar it is to some off-the-shelf ones....

Summit racing give you the grind numbers and what not, I belive jegs does too. I think those are my favorite freakin sites in the world, well besides 3ww PAW (performance automotive warehouse) has killer prices on there stuff, you may buy one fo there catologes for $5 there savings is huge.
