I'm pretty sure he's the same guy that sold me my '86 200S. Nice enough guy - but - theres sort of a shadow hanging over my purchase. When I went to look at it, it had a really bad valve tap but ran great otherwise. When I asked him about it - is where it got tricky - he said he didn't really know anything about engines or wrenching and when I asked him if he'd ever adjusted the valves or the timing chain, he said he didn't know how to. So I thought "Bingo" I'll pick up this nice 200S, adjust the valves, give it a quick "freshen up" resto, and either turn it around right away or keep it as a snow runner/yard machine for my Dad. I agreed to go through with the sale and it was only after I paid him the money, that he took me into his garage and I saw all the trikes and quads and motorcycles. That kinda proved to me right there that he was B/Sing me about the "didn't know how to wrench" part, but I tend to take people at their word and went home a little concerned but happy. I got that old sinking feeling after I started to work on it. When I went to adjust the valves, I found that they were WAY out of spec - and it would have been impossible for them to have worked themselves out that way without a little "external", human help. I also adjusted the timing chain slack. Both of those adjustments eliminated the valve tap - but - I soon realized that the Tapping was actually hiding a deeper "death rattle" rod knock. Is it possible that the guy wasn't B/Sing me - sure - but it seems a little too suspicious, and I might have paid alot less or given it a pass on purchase if I knew the truth. So I'll leave you to your own conclusions, but I would go over that 200 with a fine tooth comb. Also, how did you find the guys attitude at East Coast ATV?. The reason I ask is I've been up there a few times for parts, usually for a resto and ironically I bought my low hour '82R motor from them, and it just seemed to me they were extremely condecending. I've heard that from alot of people in the past that had dealings with them and we all came to the conclusion that unless you were there to hop up a racing quad, they didn't want anything to do with you, especially rebuilding or restoring a trike. I was just wondering if things had changed. I havn't been up there since they were in Tromburesville and running out of a huge barn behind Daves house.Originally Posted by Teeksoffroad
