    83 r wont run

I just put a new wiseco pistion and rings, fmf torque reeds and a different stator coil. I cant get it to start for nothin it has spark and its gettin fuel and it has compression. I dont know what else could be wrong, am i missing somthing because im new to 2 strokes. The oil is klotz synthetic mixed 32:1. Could the reeds be in wrong?

You are fine with the oil mixture. Check your jetting for sure, it could be off now that you have higher compression, proble better airflow via the reeds, check too see you have the right plug ( as in operating temp.) so you have a compatible ststor? Lastly, check and see you timing is all in check...and make sure the correct fuel lines go to the correct places.

If nothing else, spray a quick shot of starting fluid in and kick on it. What temp. are you attempting to start this thing? Is it a dry or moist place?

How do i check the timing, i think i put it back where it was but i dont know if that was right cause i bought it in pices. What would be a good jet to start with? I think the spark is a little weak so im going to order a new stator.

Sounds like a case of the timing being off. If it were the carb it should at least make an attempt to fire.

how do i adjust the timing? Its behind the flywheel right?

Not sure on an R but yes its the stator plate behind the flywheel. There should be a mark on the stator plate and a notch inside the stator housing that line up with each other.

To adjust the timing on an 83 r you have to take off the flywheel. The stator is held on by 3 bolts. These bolts are in slots, it's a good start to loosen all the bolts and line the stator up so that all the bolts are in the middle of the 3 slots. If it fires, but doesn't run how it should, you can advance the timing by spinning the stator/stator plate clockwise or retard the timing by spinning the assembly counterclockwise. I was having the same problems out of my 83r a while back, it just turned out being this problem....... hope you get it worked out. Oh yea, I've got a seat in my shop, its in decent shape, but the cover has some holes, but the foam seems to be good, and I've got 2-3 old sets of fiberglass fenders and the brackets, but i dont have a shifter. If you want it, I'll look into how much it'd be to ship and tell me how much you'd want to give for 'em. Sorry, but no shifter..

I tried to PM you back, but it said that you didn't accept them, so I put it on here. 50 plus shipping? I'm almost positive I have the latch but I'll have to check to be sure........

Check your jetting for sure, it could be off now that you have higher compression, proble better airflow via the reeds,
Just to clear up some info - Compression changes and or Reed changes usually don't require re-jetting. I say "usually" because every machine is different, but this is a generally accepted rule. The head is just compressing the same amount of charge, and the reed cage is after the carbouration has occured, so while it might allow the fuel charge to flow freer, it dosent change any fuel to air ratio. Also, neither Boyesen or Pro-flow mention jetting as a concern with installation of their products. Speaking of reeds though - hard starting can easily be caused by worn, mis-fitting reeds. Take out the cage and check for daylight where the petals seat. If there is a noticable gap, you could have problems starting.
