    Steering stem change?

Is there any way I can change the steering stem of a 83 big red to a 82 big red? the 83's stem is shorter and cant thread on. I was going cut it off with a wafer disk and weld the other one on, would this work??

The forks are same on the 82-84 Big Red's. I have swapped them out before. You can verify this by looking them up on www.partsfish.com. All 3 years part numbers for the triple tree set up is 51400-958-680.

I see, but it makes no sense because the stem on the 83 is as a couple inches shorter than the original. I'll mess with it, but I'm sure its to short, but the front end looks identical except for the stem. If all else fails would it be possible to just cut the short stem and weld the regular sized one on, just grind the weld off so its smooth?? Thanks Howdy.

make sure the stem is pushed up all the way. When i first put the 200x front end on I didnt have it just quite right so it seemed to be too short.
