I have to chime in with a dissenting opinion on the college issue. I agree that it is not for everyone, but that does not mean it is not a good deal.

My engineering degree has been a very good thing for me. I work for a large company with great benifits, and make a good wage. I work a 40 hour week (most of the time, but get paid OT if not). I get 4 weeks of paid vacation a year, two weeks of sick time, and 13 holiday days. I get medical, dental, and optical benfits for my family. I get company paid life insurance. I have a 401K deferred saving for retirement plan, and will also get a company funded pension when I retire.

I spend my time working on high tech state of the art development projects which are facinating by themselves, and I get paid to do them. I use millions of dollars of high tech equpment (ie really cool toys) on a regular basis. I travel all over the world on the company budget.

Not to say that there are not good jobs out there for people that do not go to school, but if you look at the statistics, your chances of having a good job with a college degree are way higher that without.

There is a lot of difference in what degree you get from college. A liberal arts degree will not help you much in the working world. You have to take the tough subjects (Math, Physics, engineering) and get degree in the sciences to get to the really good jobs. The highest paying job right out of college is Chemical engineering. The chart is just the salary, you can expect that the benifits package is worth about 30% more. You can expect to make about three times that amount when you have 30 years of experence.

I suggest anyone who wants to be wealthy, and thinks college can't help, read "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" by Robert Kiyosaki, then go on to read "The Cash Flow Quadrant" for a better understanding of how things really work in this world.... Sorry to hijack, but our schools don't teach financial education, so someone has to... James

I would have to agree. College can and does make a difference. Yes there are a few people like Adam that do just fine without it, but there are far more that dont. My dad works at a plant as a instrument tech. He has over 35yrs experience and makes real good money. It took me 3 years after graduating college to pass him salary wise. I now make more than double. He finally said a couple years ago the he was glad I went to college and not a tech school. Not every degree is worth having. Liberal arts degrees arent worth the paper they are written on in most cases. I wouldnt change a thing I have done. College has given me the tools to make good money. And best of all, I dont have to get dirty to make my money. Not that I mind. Heck I love working on trikes. What do I do? Construction Safety Engineer.

i have to half agree here. i am a blue collar worker. and DAMNN PROUD OF IT!!!!! every day i go to work for myself is like going to college. i am a carpenter/constuction worker. it wasnt until i quit working for a company after 11 years that i really found out what i am capable of doing. now i am self-employed. work is plentiful. now as for college my wife is going to be an autistic teacher. yes it is very expensive. i live in new york remember!!!! but once she finishes i wont be a million, but i will be able to live a fullfilling life. at least thats my plan lol

so i think it all depends on what you are going to college for. my sister went. 4 years and i am still making more money my first year banging nails. but her benifits, retirement, and average salary increase will most definitly by pass me. but my wife will get those same things too.

right now my wife does not work. we rely on my salary alone to survive. and i still find money to spend on my very expensive habit. thats a 3 wheeler habit.

i hope i did not blab on too much. but to each is own!!! i work and play!!!

life is not easy unless you make it. if you want to pisss and moan all day youll never become anything but a pissser and moaner!

thats all i have to say.
