Can you show me where you fill an 85/86 Z's tank from?? and other questions

    Ok,
Well I am in the possible deal of getting a Z. I was just kinda wondering where you fill the tank from??? I know its under the seat, so is it just a normal tank and cap sitting under the seat?

Also, are there any problems that are a common occurance to the 1985 tri-z? Are parts about as common as the same year 250R? How are these for tighter, twistier, rougher woods trails?

    Any help is appreciated!

The tank has an easy button release hinged gas cap under the seat.

Ive never had any problems getting OEM replacment parts for your typical maintenance items.

The most common failure is the plastic impeller which likes to come off the metal shaft. Ignoring or not recognizing this failure can often lead to a lot of other more serious failures. The fuel pumps (that only a few other models use) are super reliable and rarely fail. Personally, I feel they are the best 250 2 stroke suited for rough wooded trail riding with their longer wheelbase, and superior low end power, but many do not agree with me on that. My best setup for woods riding is to gear low, and use 22" rear tires.

What can you do to those impellers to make sure they don't come loose?

There was a thread on this before where I think they put a pin through the impeller and shaft and that held it on there. I think 03orangeshee knows a lot about this subject and I think he was trying to make a billet banshee impeller work.
    I got nothing...

a banshee impeller will not work, rebuild kit for the fuel pump is only $17.00,and there really good for woods rideing.

They still go evenetually, but they last a lot longer this way. A roll pin works better than a cotterpin.

A Banshee impeller has the fins on the inside, and cannot be used. Ive read threads where people supposedly used a Banshee billeted one, but when pressed for pictures or further explanation of how they got it to work, the threads always seem to dry up. I do not believe it is possible, but a nice photo could convince me otherwise.

What happens when the impeller goes? Does it trash something or do you just have to replace it and rebuild it?

you cant buy just the impeller you have to buy the whole shaft, that just keeps the impeller from spining on the shaft and possible overheating problems, the impeller is made out of some strong stuff ,ive never seen just the impeller go bad, usally its the mechanical seal!

Oh, Ok. Well if the shaft/Impeller go, what is the usual damage done? Is it usually bad or a costly repair? Where about is this pump located on (or possibly in???) the machine?

Easy to get to, but to replace it you need to pop off right side cover. It took me 3 seals lol I did them ALL wrong and finally I took it to a shop. Banshee works too.

If your water impeller fails, you will not have coolant flowing through the top end and it will defanatly get to hot and fry the top end.I know from experience

Hmmm,,,, wait a minute here. I think I am confusing myself in my own post after reading western star's last post. He refers to the impeller for cooling purposes. I was under the impression that there was one used in the fuel pump to create fuel flow to the carb and motor?? Is there one for each?

I think I misunderstood Tim Sr.'s post. He talked about the impeller coming off a metal shaft (which I assumed him to be talking about a fuel pump) but as you read on he specifically mentions a fuel pump (so in regards to that, the only impeller there is is for cooling purposes). So the first mentioning of an impeller in your post Tim, is about cooling. Please correct me if I still misunderstand all of this, but I think I got it: the impeller is for cooling and there is not an impeller in the fuel pump itself.

    KINTORE:
This caser you refer to....are talking about splitting the engine case (highly doubt that one though) or is there a specific case which houses the pump that you need to split? I assume KINTORE that you are referring to the pump used to circulate coolant??

    Thanks,

ok ok ok sorry!the impeller is for cooling its located in the clutch cover , you do not have to split the cases!!!! it comes off with the clutch cover. there is a small cover that comes off you remove the e clip and gear and it pulls right out. the fuel pump is a diaphram style like most snowmobiles witch can be rebuilt with a kit for $17.00 these run off pressure from the cyl.

first pic is of the gas cap.the fuel pumps rarely fail like tim said.the lower o ring might leak in them and you can get an oring at the hardware store.that is the only problem i have had with the fuel pump. as for the waterpum impellar.it is under the right clucth cover. it will go bad like tim said and smoke your top end.i would suggest any one who has not done his mod on the pump impellar, you are asking for trouble.the green impellar will start slipping on the shaft unless you drill a hole and secure it. the banshee water pump seal works fine.they are everywhere for like 10 bucks or so. the banshee water pump impellare WILL NOT fit.any one who says it will,i want some pics of that mod.they are cool bikes. i think you will like it
