    ATC70 help

My 70 is running really poor on topend. It seems to be running really rich. When you rev it up it gurgles and some black smoke comes out. What is the stock setting for the carb? I have the needle all the way in, and it seems to do the best then but still poor. I think its a card issue instead of the points. My main reason is because I started to run out of gas and it was running great then, it had plenty of power and rev'd great until it ran completely out. I took the carb apart and its seems very clean. It acts like it is getting way to much fuel on the topend. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If your not going to help KASEY don't post. I had this same topic in a thread yesterday with no response also. Though the other thread did not explain it as well as this post and covered other topics also. I realize this is not a chat room. Make sure you know what your talking about before posting.

Thanks thefox, I needed that. Kasey, it is the screw with the spring on it. It seems to only idle good when all the way in and I know that can't be right. The airfilter looks new. The tank was severely rusted, but I replaced it with a new plastic tank. I tought the carb may have been dirty because of this, but it was spotless when I took it apart. Thanks for the help you guys.

I also thought it was really strange how well it ran when it was almost out of fuel. At first I did'nt know what was going on, I just knew it was running 10 times better. Then it ran completely out, I refueled and same issue. The exhaust smells like gas bad, and it has black smoke when rev'd up.

Maybe somthing in the gas tank plugged the line and or filter because it was getting low, so now its not getting enough gas, the black smoke would be comming from a backfire from getting a little gas now and then, the backfire blows carbon out of the exhaust, which would be the black smoke your see?

Try flipping the choke on when it starts missing and see what it does.

I've seen a few 70's that anything over 1/2 throttle they'd cut out, flip the choke on and they'd rev fine, but if you left the choke on below 1/2 it would run bad.

Mine starts to run ruff, kinda like its gurgling, after half throttle. I know it is getting plenty of gas. I think to much because the exhaust smells like gas really bad. It has a new tank and fuel lines, so I know thats not the case. If I choke it, it wants to cut out instantly. I ordered some points and a carb rebuild kit today. Could someone tell me where the points are located? Are the behind the pull start?

try it with the choke lever in the opposite position and let me know....ours did this..it ran great but when going in 3rd or 4th gear top end it was wk and bogged down...switch the choke lever and it runs like a dream...not sure if it is in the on or off position cause i dont know which way is which...all that i know is it runs great with it up..

When the choke is off it idles and runs at low rpms great. When the choke is on it idles ruff, and will not rev, it just dies. The choke is not the issue. I tried it several times, but your right. It acts like the choke is on. It has plenty of power at low RPMs. It carries me in 1st anywhere, and on the road I can get into 3rd just not past half throttle. Once past half throttle it just starts to gurgle. I hope a carb rebuild and fresh points will help.

Is it burning oil? Black smoke generally means oil burning, but can mean very very ritch allso. Did you move your neadle on the carb slide?

I thought white smoke was oil. This is a very light black smoke that smells like pure gas. Not sure where the needle is that you are talking about.
