    Good News / Bad News

Well folks, I got the 86' Big Red running today. It still needs other odd and ends stuff, but I was able to ride it around the yard. It pulled strong too.

The bad news is that I think it has tranny problems. If you put it neutral, it makes a grinding noise. It will go into reverse but it makes that same grinding noise.

Super Low through 2nd seem fine. There is some noise in 3rd and it will just slam on the brakes in 4th. I mean like it locks up or something. But then it will try to move out with some throttle. I t never kills the engine at any time. Very strange.

Hmm, congrats on getting it running! Dunno bout the problems though. Could adjustments of the auto clutch help? Does it still run ok even though it's grinding?

Yeah I have been thinking it is a clutch problem. When the engine is idled down, it stops the grinding sound. Rev it up a bit and the grinding returns.

The machine tries to move forward even in neutral. You can see it trying to move on it's own from time to time.

Yeah I was telling my father-in-law that. I said,"Hey it works in three forward gears so I CAN ride."

The funny thing is that it GOES into gear it just makes that griding noise. I tried to adjust the clutch but it seems the adjuster will not go in any farther.

Now I have to fix the idle problem. It idles a bit high even with the idle mixture screw all the way in. Maybe I need to go ahead and put the air box back on and then make the adjustments.

It sure was sweet riding around the yard yesterday.

Sounds like your clutch is grabbing to hard, or like moshman said, sounds like a shifting fork too.
