Loosen off outside locknut, turn bolt to the right until second lock nut is loose, then turn bolt left until slight resistance is felt, then back off bolt by turning to the right 1 1/4 turns. Is this what you did its hard to explain.

(there is only one locknut) what I did exactly was I loosened the lock nut turned the screw all the way to the left then I turned the screw all the way to the right then to the left one quarter turn, then while holding the screw in place I tightened the lock nut when I did this the shifter got alot of slack in it,it will shift but I can lift it about 2inches and it drops
thought I would try one more time, is there any one here that can give me an idea of what happened to the shifter?
I would pull the case off to see. Hard to say.
tonight I was trying to find some info on compatable stators for my 200m when I decided to reread the section on adjusting the clutch mechanism on the 200e big red, it seems that in my haste to hurry a service I missed 2 steps at bottom of page, the result was me calling a shop and through lack of knowledge or understanding I was told to turn screw clockwise till some resistance then backoff one quarter turn this caused all the slop that I got in shifter. The propper way to make this adjustment(at least on the 185/200 models 1980-86) is to 1. loosen lock nut 2. turn screw COUNTERclockwise till you feel resistance then 3. clockwise one quater turn 4. tighten locknut, last test drive. the moral of this thread is that anything done half assed will surely return half assed results. slow down and take the time to do it right.![]()
