    speedo guys.. take a look

Well I had the front hub off again last night trying to get my speedo to work. Take a look at the pics... something ain't right because it still is not working. the tab on the hub is a little buggered up but the slot in the gearbox does catch it so it spins. This speedo worked when I brought the trike home but stopped working when i changed the front tire.

It's because you touched it, Chris. Simply because you touched it.. lol.. just kidding.
Are you sure you put it back together EXACTLY as it came out?

I don't think there is supposed to be that gap inbetween the backing plate and the fork. the axle is screwed all the way in and won't tighten any more.

I also tried pushing in the end of the fork when I was tightning down the clamp with the 4 bolts to eliminate the space between the gearbox and the fork... I think I may be missing a spacer... can anyone confirm this?

Oh it's a 250sx if that maters at all

remove the cable from the gearbox and jack up the front wheel, spint it and see if the little tang in there is spinning. If it isn't your gearbox is screwed, if it is your cable wasn't seated all the way.

i THINK i have a spare spacer. Ill check when im home wednesday and ill bring it this weekend.

when you changed the wheel, you could have easily lost the spacer. Im almost positive i have a spare one laying around and even if i dont, i know i have of at least 1 that i was supposed to use on my 200s but didnt.

Whoa, thanks Mike,, I was wondering if a piece of pvc pipe cut to the proper legnth would work as well?

I just seen on maine trikers tripmeter post there is a spacer inbetween his gearbox and fork. I dont remeber seeing one on here but if there was one on there I probably lost it somewhere.

The gearbox and cable are fine I just can't get it to seat properly in there.

I thought the SX kit didn't have a spacer... but I could be wrong. It could also be that your cable isn't in the gearbox all the way.

    These pic's help at all?

You need to take pictures BEFORE you rip something apart Chris!

You can see the R side has a spacer and the L a gap just like yours.

Not sure about speedo hook up though.

Ok, Yea, I was wondering about that gap there on the backing plate. Your seems to be in the same place mine is. Still not sure if the 250sx speedo setup uses a spacer on the axle though. I think I will take the whole set up off and stash it away for a while till I find a hub with a good nipple on it. I wanted the odometer to work for our ride this weekend though. Wanted see how many miles we put on.

Ok. This is not rocket science. You do not need a spacer for that bike. The stock spacer on the right side is replaced with the gear. Take the axle cap off, loosen the axle a little and make sure the gear is slid up inside the hub as far as it should go. Seated in the hub good. Unhook your cable from the speedo head. Unscrew the little screw on the gear, and unhook your cable from the gear. Now push on the inner metal part of the cable that spins on the upper part of the cable. (Speedo end) Make it stick out on the other end. (gear end) Now take that piece and line it up with the little flat screw driver end looking piece down inside the gear. Line it up and slide it down in there. Now slide the calble housing (black rubber part) all the way down in the hole. All the way. It should bottom out. When you get it down there, put that screw back in to hold it in place. Now take the Speedo end and thread it on there. It should line its self up. Now tighten the axle and put the axle cap back on. DONT over tighten the axle. If you do, it can rip the threads loose inside the fork leg which would require you to buy a new fork. After you do this, try it. If it doesnt work, jack up the front end and spin the front tire. The inner part of the gear should be spinning. The outer part should be stationary. It should work. if it doesnt work, unhook the cable from the speedo while the front ends off the ground. Spin the tire and see if the cable is turning. If its not, your gear is toast. If it is, something has gone haywire with your speedo head. They are pretty simple little pieces. The speedo kits and heads. There is not much it can be. The spacing and Axle being tight has nothing to do with it. The axle could be a half round loose, and it would work. Hope this helps

i was just thinking that if the gear is loose between the hub and the fork, that the little tang from the hub is slipping out of the gear. The spacer would hold everything together tighter, if needed.

Oh, and if you want to get your fork legs to move inward or outward, loosen the tripple tree bolts and spin the fork leg. Almost all SX forks are slightly bent. You will see how bent they are when you do this. Loosen the tripple tree bolts and put a wrench on the top of th fork cap and turn it. With the tire on for refrence. Turn it clock wise so you dont take the for tube top cap off by accident. Turn it and look down the leg at the spacing. It will likely move inward for flex outward. This will reveal how straight they are. My first SX's were bad. If you did them both, you could actually get a extra inch and a half spacing out of them. Or vise versa. I have a few of these kits, and there is no spacer that goes there.

By doing this check it will possibly close that gap in tighter. The drum side of the wheel looked perfect. I really couldnt tell much from the other side.
