    Carb Issues (Throttle Response)....Buy a Rebuild Kit or No?

    Alright, lately I've noticed that on my '87 Big Red, the throttle response has been a little sluggish when the bike is warming up, it gets a little more responsive when it warms up though. The thing is, now, even if it's warmed up, you can't hit the gas too fast or it will sort of bogg and cough. If you give it gas at medium speed, it doesn't bogg much. I took apart the carb last week, took out all the jets, cleaned everything with carb cleaner, put it back together, and when I first cranked it, it had awesome throttle response and felt like brand new. Now it's back to slow throttle response. Should I prob. invest in a carb rebuild kit? What are your experiences with them? Also, when putting the jets back in, do you screw them in all the way or what? I know the manual says not to screw the pilot one all the way in....Any tips, suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

    maybe trash in the petcock? yes, screw the jets in.

    Oh, it has a new petcock btw....and I've always ran an inline fuel filter too.

    Jets get screwed in all the way, and on old ones, low strength Loctite to seal the threads. Seat air screw till it just touches and then back it out.

    Need to get some way to measure the fuel in the bowl without taking the carb apart. A high fuel level will make it do that.

    Two possibilities:

    1.) Fuel level too high. dirt in the float needle or defective needle/seat.

    2.) ignition problems, and yes, working on carb or other non-electrical things can disturb bad wiring and make it act differently for a while.

    Hey thanks TeamG, how would I go about reducing the amount of fuel in the float bowl? I'm prob. gonna get a carb rebuild kit and redo the whole thing by the book plus I need to replace the choke cable anyways.

    Also blow open all the openings while apart with compressed air.

    Yeah, I am going to blow out/clean out everything on it when I redo it...hopefully that will do it along with a new carb kit.
