250r trans won't shift into neutral, any ideas

I just got my 250r back together. Did it all myself with the help from here and .org. Bike runs great and shifts through all 6 gears fine. I just can't get it into neutral when the motor is running. If you shut it off it goes into neutral just fine. It does seem to be a little notchier when shifting than before. Any ideas on what may cause this other than a bent shift fork, I'd like to try all alternatives before splitting the cases again.

how is the clutch basket? sounds like the basket is worn and not letting the plastes to float freely..

I had this happen to me as well. I thought that the clutch cable on the R was way too tight, so I loosened it a bit. Well when I went to pop it into neutral, it would just go between 1st and 2nd and not go into neutral. After I tightened the cable back up, it worked fine. I guess my clutch its simply hard to pull

Clutch basket is a little worn. IE there are some very small steps in it. But it never had a problem going into neutral before the bottom end rebuild. Could it just take some time for it to wear in again? The clutch basket also had a little in and out play in it. Is this normal or shoud it be tight with no in and out movement.

I know those close ratio transmissions can be a little touchy.
Have you tried to see if it will go into N without the trike running and using your hand to lightly jog the shifter between 1st and 2nd?

Normal for old 250Rs, clutch basket or wear on the push rod or mushroom. Mine does it.
