Probably an internal problem related to a bent shift fork or something with the shift drum. Both require complete and total dissasembly of the engine.

Yup. That aint clutch. no, is not about oil coating, I assemble these trannys totally dry and then rotate them by hand to prove that its not binding anywhere, then I oil it.
Its not unusual for teh shift lever to refuse to go up or down when the engine is not turning. Lift the rear wheels and turn them while running through the gears by hand, might feel something binding.

I tried to go for a ride after rebuilding the carb and it didn't shift one way or another. I finally got it to move after I pulled the cover and played around a bit. It went through all the gears ok. After sitting for in the garage for a few it didn't wanna catch 4th & 5th with out rocking it a bit.
I am replacing the clutch because the plates are worn, springs about shot and I scored a clutch off ebay complete for $21.50.
Ill try lifting the ass end up and see what happens.
Thanks
