Chain Won't Loosen! *PICS ADDED*

Am I doing something wrong? The chain on my 83R wont come any looser and it is rubbing on the lower frame rail. it has the stock number of sproket teeth front and rear and stock number of links in chain. I take the rear wheels off the ground, loosen the 2 bolts on the rear and turn the adjuster but nothing seems to happen, also how do i rotate the bearing carrier, i dont see the grooves to turn it, do you? Thanks

I cant find any grooves on it?

then a previous owner neglected to use the proper tool to rotate the carrier and chewed all the grooves off. they probably used channel lock pliers or a monkey wrench. if thats truly the case then you have to get a good used carrier or a new billet one.

I've seen new billet RAD bearing carriers on ebay for around $180-220 dependeing on who the seller is. not a bad deal if you ask me. the adjustment notches are re-designed so they are not able to be chewed up.

It looks like there is a bolt on the side of that swingarm. I think there is a roller or tensioner that goes on there which would make sense but I am not an expert on 84's.

That was just a chain guide that went there, I took it off to order a new one but soon found out the they dont make them anymore.

ok the outline is showing where those grooves are supposed to be. they have definatly been chewed off by a previous owner. you have to get a good used one or a new billet one.
