    Question Difference between the years???

There are 3 machines as to which I'm curious as to exactly what the changes were between the two years.....
-The first is the 86 to 87 tecate. Was there even anything changed from year to year? If so what was the gain?
-Second is the 85 to 86 350X. Agian, these also appear identical.
-Third is the 85 to 86 250R. I know the headlight was made brighter and the layout of the swinger was changed and the carb, anything else though? Was the 86 better or worse?
I've been meaning to ask these for a while. If anyone else has the same question about other machines feel free to piggy-back on my thread
    Thanks guys! -Devin

The 85 -86 350x has a different rear break caliper setup. The cam chain tensioners are different. The triple trees have black paint on the 86. 85 are chrome. Carbs are a little different. There are a few more that I cant think of do a search this has been talked about a lot.

Also Obviously - the 85 and 86 350X's are color schemed differently - 86's being all white and 85's being mostly red

85r and 86r forks are different, rear ends, motors are slightly different, carbs different, something is different with the front hub, foot pegs, different mold and color plastic, graphics. if you put on 86 forks, 86 carb, and foot pegs there isn't much difference to note of

87 T3s had a keyed ignition and a parking brake. Other than that, they're identical.

The R's have a lot of subtle differences. In addition to what deathman mentioned, the fork rake is different and the frame was changed slightly. Most people that have rode both tend to say the 86 handles better.

87 Tecate's also had rolled bead rims, and I'd have to check my 2 microfiche's, but I believe that the 87 cylinder has a different part # also.

87 Tecate also has a different adjustment on the shock reservior. The 86 has two knobs which if I remember right are high and low speed compression damping adjustment. The 87 has just one compression adjustment knob.

The decals between 86 & 87 are indeed different.

There's also a small difference in the infamous right hand shroud. The corner of the shroud that is right above the pipe is more squared off on my original 86 shroud than it is on later model factory shrouds I have. It's like they changed the mold for more clearance later in 86 or for the 87. There's supposed to be some minor rear fender differences too, but I don't know what they are.

Jeb is right, I think the change to the rear fenders on the t3 came in later 86 production even, the early ones according to the magazine tests were cracking and breaking pretty bad, and also getting into the tires pretty bad on turns maybe they changed the compound or something who knows. The hondas got different plastic compound in 86 that was supposed to be less brittle as well to reduce cracking, the headlight plastic on the 86 R was a different shape, engine color is gun metal instead of black etc, seat on 86 is taller foam, top triple was black like the 86 350x, as was stated the forks on the 86 were different they had one piece springs instead of two piece like the 85 the biggest mechanical advantage is probably the floating rear brake setup on the 86 250r and 350x that did away with the bar going to the swinger, that's alot better design, and the carrier / chain adjuster that you don't have to have a spanner wrench to turn, but having had both 85 and 86 bikes I say the 85 rearend held the chain setting better and didn't slip and loosen as quickly at least on the bikes I've seen. Most of the small changes done to the 86 350x other than color of plastic were alot of small engine changes that were supposed to make it easier to crank but they didn't really help that much a couple others were supposedly for improved oiling etc.
