Definately an '85 brake setup and swinger. The reason you can tell is because the '86 swinger is more reinforced than the '85 and the '85 brake system uses that black bracket and aluminum caliper slider (I think thats what its called....)

I'm thinking this guy might have been getting played by his mechanic. I don't see any evidence that the cylinder was removed to inspect the top end. The head is loose, but big deal. Looks like he popped the head off and said "you need a rebuild, that'll be another $700" (reason #1 to learn to do your own repairs kids!). I popped the head off and things look ok to me there at least. The cam looks funny in the pics but the surface is actually fine. I popped the spark plug in and it had good compression with the plug just being finger tight. Hmmm...

The guy called me to say he found some of the parts it's missing. Some bolts and a red bracket (the missing upper motor mount). Maybe I'll just bolt it together with a new head gasket when I get the rest of the stuff and see if she fires. He said it ran good and fast before he took it to the shop (lol).

Anybody see anything missing and/or out of place? Do all 350x's have dual cam chains like that?

Question: do you have to take the engine out of the frame to do a top end rebuild on these things?

    quote the manual

the engine must be removed to service the cylinder and piston

the cam/cylinder head/valves can be done in frame, but its probably easier to take it out

    Update 6/4/06

I just put it back together as best I could without knowing where half the bolts go, missing a couple and a couple being in unusable condition.

    Re-cap of this things story.

Supposedly the guy took it to the shop for a new carb. Mechanic installed new carb, charged him for it, THEN said "oh yeah, I inspected the motor and needs rebuilt. That'll run another $700." To which the guy said no way and it's sat with the rocker cover off ever since. That was 2 years ago.

After taking a good look at it, I suspected the guy was getting completely lied to by this mechanic. I WAS RIGHT! HAHAHA! I just threw it back together quick and sloppy to see if it would start and it started on the third kick with no choke! No blue smoke coming from the exhaust. Good power. Took it just down the street and back and it wheelied the first three gears.

IT PAYS TO DO YOU OWN MECHANICAL WORK! Never trust a shop unless the owner is your brother (and even then, do your research).

The thing leaks like a fountain. Somewhere in the bottom end is leaking pretty good. Not sure where that's coming from but I think it might just be the clutch cover. The petcock leaks like crazy. That oil line that bolts to the rocker cover is leaking pretty good right there. Not sure why. Little bit coming from the rocker cover but I didn't put any sealer or anything on it. I think there's one or two stripped threads in the head. Either that or I was trying to use the wrong bolt which is very possible.

I'm feeling pretty good about the purchase now. I can make a rider out of it with minimal expense (but we all know I won't stop there).

Can anyone list EVERYTHING I would need to convert it back to a 1986 style swingarm? I noticed today that the front skid plate mount on it is wasted so maybe I'll go back to a 1986 type when I swap it out.

    It's not very organized actually.

One of these is going away (the air fooler). I just got a bunch of shelves which is going to help a ton. Now I have to find room for a huge 80 gallon air compressor, the sand blaster and an oven.

NO MORE TRIKES FOR A WHILE! Well unless I find a good deal on something...

I think all you would need is the '86 swinger and '86 brake setup (caliper, slider, etc.). I was able to put an '86 swingarm on my '85 350X easily.. I was even able to use the '85 brake setup thanks to a little welding by dirtface. I used an '86 shock, '86 swinger, '85 axle, '85 brakes, and '85 bearing carrier.. so it seems that everything on the rear of the X other than the brake setup is interchangeable between the '85 and '86 models.

I typed up all I could think of for Sandpuppi like a week or 2 ago.... can't remember the total I came up with, but it was in that ball-park.

! It looks like your in the Phoenix area, Got a few excellent pieces for a 85'250R, 86'350X. Seems like when I'm riding in the valley I'm the only one on 3 wheels. Maybe one day when I can catch up with techology I'll post pictures of my bike's: 86'ATC250R, 86'ATC350X, both mint, 84'250R on it's way to being mint and another complete 86'250R in pieces, it's all there, Don't know what I want to do with it.
