Ignition Coil Input, Will This Work?

I have this atc 70, found this ignition coil on ebay

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Honda...QQcmdZViewItem

wonder if anyone can think of a reason why it wouldn't work.

Its half the price of OEM and thats shipped.

    Thanks

    edit

I laid the stator wire on the case got one good blue spark, then nothing. Any suggestions? change points and condensor, how do I check the stator(s)? thanks

You probably could make it work. But let me ask you why you need it? Lack of spark? If so, Have you eliminated all other possabilities first? I ask because I have found very few coils ever go bad.

Well, there was no spark, was spark fron the stator/magneto, besides, someone broke the spark plug wire, so Im gonna replace it.

Before I removed the head, there was a nice blue spark at the plug, thats why I went ahead and fixed the head. After, no blue spark, nada. I didn't have to touch any wires during the repair, so Im clueless. The spark plug wire could be rotated 360 degrees, so Im thinking someone broke it.

I connected a car coil to it and while I saw no spark, I felt a jolt through my hand..haha.

Gonna clean the points and all that jazz once I get the coil or as I wait.

If you get any spark your stator is producing juice, so you can pretty much eliminate that. Also since you only get one spark I am inclinded to say your points are probably the problem. Check them again to be sure they are set properly, and that none of the wires are grounding out. I bet doing this will fix your problem

I had a hell of a time trying to get the points set up on my old 70, they are very touchy to the setting you have them at. Try messing around with the point position a little to see if you get any spark.

Points can be a pain to set. But I have a method that works great ( fro me anyway ).
    1) I disconnect the wire to them, and connect a 2 foot long piece of light scrap wire to them.
    2) I then route the wire so that I can re-install the flywheel ( requirement on a ATC70 ) with out the wire touching the flywheel.
    3) Install the flywheel snuggly but not fully tight ( it will need to be removed again ).
    4) I then grab my test light and a battery charger. A) I hook one end of the test light to the end of added wire. B ) I hook the other end of the test light to one end of the battery charger. C) Hook the other end of the battery charger to the motor. NOTE: When the points are closed the test light will light up.
    5) I then slowly adjust the points to where the test light goes out when it hits the "Fire" mark.
    6) I then tighten the points up so they can't move. I spin the flywheel around a couple times to be sure I have them set dead on ( light goes off and on at the correct time via the timing marks.
    7) Once I know they are set dead on, and tightened down properly, I remove the flywheel and then remove my wire.
    8) Then install the proper wire, re-install the flywheel and the rest of the motor shields.
    9) Your done setting the points.

It may seem like a lot of work, and to some people it may be. But it's actually pretty easy ( you will need to own a flywheel puller for the ATC70 flywheels though ). I know I have used this method 100% of the time for the past 15-20 years with SUPER success. I won't do it ANY other way.

    Hope it helps.

    thanks slothminx and howdy

yep, ordered the tool as well, so I could clean the stator ends and flywheel.

Can't I just gap the points? Anyone know the specs?

    Well fellas, thanks.

While I was there I took a small wire wheel and cleaned the stator ends and the flywheel, then replaced the points. I was looking at the old points and noticed the plastic piece that rides on the flywheel eccentric was worn, the points just weren't opening.

Also realized points installation was a snap, you had me worried.

All I did was install points, loosen hold down screw, install the flywheel. Rotate flywheel until the lowest point of the eccentric was facing the points, put one screwdriver through the flywheel window, held the points firmly against the eccentric, used another screwdriver to tighten. Too easy.

When I was done, I didn't have a coil for it, so I took a tfi coil for an early 90's ford truck and wired it in, also cut the boot end off the automotive wire, screwed the atc plug boot on.

SHE FIRED THE FIRST PULL OF THE STRING.

    Congratulations................
But If I may make a remark about your first "POINT-SETTING" experience..........

Either your very good-----Or VERY LUCKY....-------- Myself along with plenty of guys on the boards have fought endlessly with points........Almost to the point of checking them "The first time" "Every time " something isnt right.----Just food for thought.

Im not really clear, what the deal is.

The eccentric on the flywheel appears to be directly opposite the key on the hub. Theres a window on the flywheel, loosen the points, press against hub and tighten. Also, there is notch for a flat blade screwdriver to align them. maybe I got lucky.

If it works----then LEAVE IT ALONE-----LOL

Normally they are just very "Picky" as to how they are set up.......If you got it to run, with minimal trouble---KUDOS......But it isnt uncommon for really violent, tool chucking, Swearing , and knuckle busting......

Well folks, word of warning on the coil I listed above...

I finally receive the coil from that company, they send one totally different than the one pictured, only one mounting hole and its vertical not hoizontal, like the atc70 uses. This would be my fault BUT I e-mailed the guy before the auction ended and asked the distance, center to center of the two mounting holes, he said 2", which would imply he physically held the coil I saw in the picture, not the one he sent, oh well, I wired it up anyhow and the darn thing wouldn't even run. I reconnected the truck coil, she fired the first time, so, I made a bracket and now it uses a truck coil. Hopefully the dipstick will send the right coil, if not, shoulda just bought the right one to begin with. Haha...thats life, find a deal your a winner, get burnt on a bargain, your bound to go in the hole.

well folks, I don't wanna tell a half truth so...

the guy with the ebay coils did make things right, yeah, im shocked too, , hes gonna send the right coil, doubt it will work either but at least he tried to make it right as far as he was concerned.

didn't even request the wrong part back.

i'll post the results of the right coil, just incase anyone gives a crap.
