Yes you should get a pre-filter.

Some people on here will knock K&N but I think they're the best filter out there. I have THE SAME filter on my R that was on it when I bought the thing in 1989 and it's still good as new. I ride in some of the dustiest places on earth but there's never a speck of dust in my intake boot past the filter. The key thing with a K&N is oiling it correctly. Due to the shape you have to spray it at an angle, then go the opposite direction and hit it from the other angle.

Some people will also argue that a Uni flows better. I have proven it to myself that this isn't the case. Back to back test with a Uni clamped right to the carb with no airbox versus a K&N in the airbox with no lid. I had to drop a main jet size with the Uni on it. Proof positive for me that the K&N was letting more air through and no dust in the boot tells me it's doing a great job cleaning the dusty air out here.

Consider it fifty bucks well spent!

Ive never used a pre-filter on mine, and dont see a need to start. I think performance gains are more psychological than anything else. Im sure somebody will disagree, but if you normally do a good job of keeping your stock filter clean, I doubt youll notice any difference. The big plus of the KN is that it takes a lot more dirt before you start getting airflow restriction because of the larger surface area of the ruffle design. I baught mine because it was a lot cheaper than the stock replacement at the time. I also find it much easier to service for me, which means it gets done more often. I agree that its money well sprnt, but if you are expecting a major performance difference, or even a noticeable one, youll probably be disappointed.
