Good info. Esr says theirs is ported already. Just saw some photos of it. I'm leaning that way now. Since no one has tried it yet maybe i can give some good feedback.

1986 250R- mild porting, carb mods (Clean!)

    1986 250sx- Mostly stock

1985 200x- (pretty clean mostly stock)

I use a 86-98 cr rad valve and a 1/2 spacer, it fits my 39mm carb perfect.

When I was shopping for a new cage I asked about them at a couple different places that carried both the v-force and the rad valve. One of them was Trinity Racing but I can't remember who the other one I was. Anyway, They both said almost the exact same thing. Top end power will be virtually identical but the rad valve will hit a little sooner and the delivery is smoother. Take that for whatever you want. I usually don't put much stock in what these shops tell me but it was so similar that I assume there must be some truth to it.

I installed the rad valve at the same time as a new carb so I can't comment on what kind of difference it made over a stock cage with boyesen reeds. The two of them together made a good difference though.

You better do some WOT plug chops. 165 main for what you're running sounds lean. I'm running a 178 with a smaller carb and a smaller bore. I bet that 52 pilot helped a ton though.

ok, ive tried the v-force, rad valve, ram valve, ported ram valve with stuffer removed, CR, ported CR, stock, ported stock and the ESR reed cages. from experience with all of the cages, i would rate the ESR at #1 and it is definately not the same as a v-force, the ESR has huge petals and it is all billet and the carb side has knife-edged crosshairs to strighten the flow, extremely high quality, second was with the ported-to-hell ram valve with stuffers removed, it cranked, but when i put nitrous to my R, i blew the reeds out the air filter(dont ask me how, idk), and third was the v-force 3, it seems restricting to me, i still run it on my rider, but the motor doesnt seem as free to rev as the others

Larger bore motors have less velocity, so they use smaller jets. I went from a 190 (warm weather) 200 (cold weather) on my bike to a 175 main in cold weather when I went from the 250 to the 330. I run a 40.5 PWK. It sounds counterintuitive, but it's true.

Yeah I thought I'd seen someone post that before after I said that. Still. Better safe than sorry.
