    82 250R w/Big Bore or 85-86 250r???????

    Hi there all,
Once again I'm in some need of advice. I have a 1982 Honda ATC 250R with a .30 over bore, 36mm carb., and slincer (No aftermarket pipe haven't found one for my year yet)
Now here is the question. Would I be better off rebuilding my 82 250R with the big bore kit, say 300???? Or Just getting a 85-86 250R and just doing the standard carb and pipe upgrade????

If you can do it go to an 85-86 there are so many advantages to the later years. Better Suspension, Liquid Cooled, and greater parts availability just to name a few. The air cooled R's were great in there day but the liquid cooled ones are a far better machine.

    I agree with John R.

    Also,
by making it a 300 you increase the power (of course). Well with power comes more heat, since the 82 isn't watercooled you might start having heat issues. And you'll get less preformance from it when its overheating. I would get an 85-86 R and go from there.

    250r

yea, upgrading to a bigger bore will make it run hotter and you should think about getting a DG cylinder and head to help keep it cooler but then again that would run you about $200 or so. I would say bore it to 300 and then get a K & N airfilter and DG pipe. Then it should scream, but if you want something fast as hell, get a 85-86 R, they are not cheap, but if you want power then go for the 85-86. but you could spend less and get your 82 built up and still have lots of balls. AGAIN it just depends on $$$$$$$$.

Thanks guys, I just got my bike back together and I'm going to race my neighebor who has an 85 or 86 ATC 250r. I just did a .030 bore, milled the head and 36mm carb on it. My 250r seems very toqurey but I will only know if it can keep up with his. Also I was wondering just how much better the suspension was on an 85-86 compared to the 82??????

It is noticeably better. The front forks are a larger diameter and the rear shock is the same set up as the trx250r which we all know is the best MX quad out there.

if you guys are so smart about R's, how would you make an 83-84 competetive, knowing there are no (that I have found) big bore kits left for them................???

I thought the 85-86 suspension is too floaty.

In my opinion> the lower your trike, the better handling, which leads to better jumping.

There are many other ways to gain performance other than increasing displacement.
