250r Pipe? Updated!!

I remember reading somewhere here on the forums that you could split a stock 250r pipe open and remove something and it would enhance the pipe characteristics. I don't remember what years. The only reason I brought this up because the stock pipe on my 85 has been cut on the top seem and about 1/2in. on one side starting from from the stinger and up past the frame mounting tab.

they do something like removing the liner and grinding down the welds, it supposibly makes the pipe good from bottom to top.

I don't believe there is anything in there besides open space. If it was split open it was probably to fix a dent.

I doubt that they did it to repair a dent. The pipe is without dents now or previous. If they were to open it up to repair a dent there would of been residual signs left. Like a little crease line or over push marks from whatever they used to push it out. And even with heat it would still show signs. Even if you opened it up enough to dolly out a dent there would be signs of stress left behind on the back half of the pipe. And if someone had the time and skills to do the work and show no signs of them being there other than the welds. You would of thought they would of just built a custom pipe and trash a stocker with a dent that large. And they wouldn't have left cat back(cat backed up and *Edited**Edited**Edited**Edited*) looking welds after doing such a phenomenal job of repairing a dent. I just don't see it as ever being repaired.

Last night I decide to take a peek inside a stock 85R pipe. I made a 10" cut down the top seem and peeked in. Well there is perforated steel lining the whole belly of the pipe. I'll finish splitting the pipe in-half by this weekend and post pics as it progresses.

thats neat, never knew that, but they are alot heavier than aftermarket pipes.

From what I can see now, it should loose at least 1lb. and who knows how much carbon is stuck behind it. I'm going to check some of the dimensions and run them through a pipe program that I have and see how close it is too being in tune with the stock motor.

I know it's an old thread but I have to finish it. I just forgot to post up the pics. For anyone who says there is nothing inside a stock 85-86R pipe here's the proof. The dime size dimples you see on the back of the pipe and under the heat sheild hold the perforated metal out far enough to give room for what looks like some type of ceramic backing. I might actual finish modifying this pipe just to see how well it will preform.

not only restrictive eddogy dog but it also cuts down on the noise, have you ever run a stock pipe without a silencer? its only as loud as a aftermarket pipe with a packed silencer is!! I think the most restrictive stock pipe in the 2 stroke world is a blaster, that thing is filled with all kinds of baffles, cool deal, im curious to see how it improves everything.
