    Ice Racing against the quads (pics)

    Every winter, we brave the cold to race circle track in Greenwood Lake NY. Ther are a couple threewheelers, but it's mostly quads who think they are fast. Especially the typical Banshee owner. This particular day, we built a "road race course" with sweepers, a 1/8 mile straight, and a couple sharp turns. I was the only threewheeler racing that day.

    The guy on the Banshee is one of our friends that races motocross. He had never raced a threewheeler before. He just knew that his Banshee was fast.

    This is another friend, Mike. He has raced us before, but this year he has a new bike and a new setup that he believed would be more competitive.

    We all lined up for a 3 lap race on the road track. None of us raced on a track this large before, so no one had an idea of who would take the victory. I wasn't trying to show off with the wheelie, it was a 2nd gear start and more traction than I anticipated.

    I took the holeshot....

    <img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1975147" width=320 height=240>

    and never looked back.

    <img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1975156" width=320 height=240>

    The Banshees kept trying, but ended up racing against themselves.

    <img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1975131" width=400 height=300>

    I ended up lapping two guys.

    <img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1975179" width=320 height=240>

    I had the track to myself....

    <img src="http://image1ex.villagephotos.com/pubimage.asp?id_=1975122" width=400 height=300>

    and gladly took victory! They couldn't believe how fast the 250R was. Every year the group of racers grows. Hopefully some of you can get to GWL and race with us next year.[img][/img]

    That looks like a blast! Definate 3 wheeled advantage on the ice. I would think a Banshee would be one of the worst ice racers with its heavy front end, and excessive wheelspin (even on dry dirt!). I am curious as to how some of the 4 strokes, and lightweight Blasters do on ice compared to some of the others. Ever run with any? I would think Blasters would do well amongst quads, or do those studded tires really hook up well enough to use the power of the big boys?

    I think the Banshee's would do good on ice with ice screws in. Nice victory ChrisD, Good Luck with your other races. 8)
    [20:55] <waterpumper> putting a racing pipe on a Foreman is like putting a high dollar bikini on a 400 pound chick...just because it fits doesn't mean it looks cool

    I love it! :-D
    I hope to do the same thing on dirt here in a couple months. My R's progressing nicely, but I still have about $1000 worth more stuff to add or modify. Not to mention I really have to put some time in the saddle. I should be on the track in May.

    Great work!

    I need:
    extended axle
    boring/porting
    reeds
    adjustable strut
    I may swap the PT Hi Rev for an ESR ATC-5
    '84 ATC70.....my 8-y.o. son's ride

    It sucks I missed that day!! Chris, who was on the Z-400? Billy Key? Some four strokes came out at an oval we had set up another weekend, one was a Z-400and boy was he suprised when my 350x came whipping past him both on the oval and on top end across the lake!! There was a Cannondale and a few 400EX's out there too, non of them could hang with the trikes. I was even lucky enough to have some clown on a Polaris Predator come after me when I was on my 330R, needless to say he got embarrassed pretty bad in a drag race. I think on a MX track the quad has a definite advantage but flat tracks seem to favor the trikes. My TRX is 100% set up for flat tracks and I barely rode it, the 350x was faster not to mention the 330R.

    Excellent job.

    I can hardly find any quads around here to race anymore. They use the excuse that the 250R is a 100 pounds lighter. Good to see someone else kicking their butts. Keep smoking um.
